I wouldn't argue with you or Rick on this one. As much as I have liked many of the things Dubas has done, failing to upgrade the backup position is on him - especially when you consider they want to allocate 20 - 25 starts to that position. He rolled the dice on Sparks - and that was a gamble most would have and felt should have been taken. Looking at how Pickard played afterwards doesn't seem to be much of a loss, but McElhinney would have been better last year. This year his .899 svp and 3.94 GAA is positively Sparksian.
When you get into the $700 - $750k range, the options available were really no better than what we have in Hutchinson. Would Johnson be better? Did they give up Neuvirth too easily? I don't know. Even with some savings, there are very few options available up to the $1.5m range -- but it should have been addressed. - Monkeypunk
The cap space available to sign a backup goaltender was definetely an issue.
Ideally you'd either have a young goaltender in the ranks to take that spot (Sparks tried and failed) or sign a cheap UFA.
Looking around the league, plenty of teams found decent backup between 1.75 and 2.5M. I guess you needed to go to that range to make a "safer" bet on a backup goaltender. |

I was under the impression Neuvirth, himself, gave up too easily... |

it will be hilarious if either are actually claimed....

I'm 100% certain Marincin will get claimed |

Honestly hope they keep Spezza. Guy had a good game the other night, scoring the shootout goal and more. He seems to have some JAM as well. Good mentor for our young guys... Shore will never be more then what he is, a KHL marginal NHLer. Do we really care that much about him winning faceoffs...
When HYman is back we dont need shore to kill penalties. |

Agree, I don't even know how it's a question to keep spezza or shore...
spezza could play left handed and blindfolded and still be the better player |

Exactly. Did you see him pass the puck to no-one in the offensive zone, like 6 times? And then get fed over and over from marner and miss the net? |

That was my impression as well. He chose not to play in a preseason game while on a PTO. That pretty much precludes him. Maybe there was more to it - maybe there was a realization that the max contract would be $700k - who knows. Really, you're on a PTO playing against guys who already have contracts, you'd better impress. |

Yes, I did notice a nice pass into the slot. None of our players were around and the offensive pressure ended... FAIL |

It is likely he will.
Marincin
Shore
Spezza
Is who I'd be forced to waive.
Good chance Babs goes with:
Marincin
Spezza
Timashov
Cause of Shore's faceoff winning abilities and PK.
But in all honesty I don't care who gets waived. I just want to see Hyman back in the lineup and get that JT line back to a top 5 line In the NHL. - LeafGuy89
Marincin and forward Petan on waivers Thursday according to TSN.

That is a good night, usually have 10-11 skaters. Thats not bad when you are playing d, you can get in a rhythm, but 2 lines on forward is hard after the first period...
