so trump being dumb is okay because other people are dumb.... oohhhh-kayyyy.....
- twiztedmike

I said he has said dumb things. I didn’t say he was dumb. He never said he’s whatever percent Indian to get a job, or no one needs a gun that can fire a hundred magazines.
Or that we have 57 states.
Or that you need a slight Indian accent to work at a 7-11.
The earth is going to be destroyed in ten years.
That Miami will be underwater by now.
Or asking Ed if he meant cleaning the hard drive with a cloth.
That depends what the meaning of is is.

Well Assuming grapes meant exactly what everyone thinks he meant I‘m not quite sure it’s as offensive as it’s made out to be. What’s xenophobic about saying immigrants come here and enjoy our way of life? Is that not a fact, do immigrants not come here and enjoy our way of life. I don’t know what provoked this rant, perhaps being told that less people are wearing poppies and a look around large visually diverse city centres. The fact that all Canadians have participated in many Remembrance Day ceremonies at the very least throughout their childhood and know better which an immigrant from a country that doesn’t practice a form of Remembrance Day may not understand that this is not just a tradition but a show of respect. New Canadians from those countries have an excuse not to know but many do and participate by at least wearing a poppy. While he could have been less harsh is it really wrong to say people should wear a poppy, especially when a portion of that group may be unaware of the level of significance this show of respect carries.

Very interesting and thoughtful take on the matter, but in terms of hockey analogies getting fire is not even close to being appropriate. Hockey players utter Homophobic and racist slurs on the ice all the time. Name one player in the past few years that got a lifetime suspension from the game for that. I think everyone would agree that a pointed Homophobic and racist slur against a person is far more hateful in nature then a generality about buying a poppy. in 2017 Ryan Getzlaf issued a Homophobic slurs. He was fined $10,000 and no suspension. That is about the same as a $10 fine for the average person (no big deal). in 2016 Andrew Shaw was suspended one game by the NHL for a homophobic slur. Both cases the penalty negligible. So Cherry's penalty is way off base, and if Rogers is so offended by Cherry, then they should even broadcast any sports as hateful or offensive comments are made regularly.

The reality is that both the league and SN are two separate entities and can discipline their employees how they choose. I don’t agree with the decision and the way it was carried but they get to choose what they want their brand to be and who can be a part of it. Some people didn’t like what cherry had to say/has been saying over the years and SN decided act on said people’s feelings. Nothing wrong with that as they get to choose their brand. The only indication they will get as to ether that was the right decision or not will be in the ratings. What grinds my gears about SN is sure they don’t owe Don anything as they already have made him a millionaire and while over the past few years he hasn’t been the draw to HNIC he used to be, for the large part of his career he was HNIC’s brand. You ask any kid growing up what they think of when they hear HNIC their answer will most likely be some combination of the leafs and coach’s corner. It would have been received a lot better had they given the longtime face of their franchise at least one last segment of coach’s corner to say goodbye

“You may not know this, but I have a policy with my writers to not write about politics on Hockeybuzz.”

You know what? I don’t know that because you have “writers” like Tanner who constantly spout off about politics blasting others for their views. Numerous other bloggers on this site have done the same so this is a complete, utter, load of crap.

What ever happened to freedom of speech? One can hardly talk with out someone twisting your words into something you didn’t mean or say. I come from a military family and believe those that fought and gave all deserve the respect of remembrance for their service. I remember when PC started and it’s getting worse as time goes on. Where will the line be drawn? Jeffery Epstein didn’t kill himself

I am okay with Cherry being gone from Sportsnet and HNIC.

He would be an improvement if he replaced Trump. But, at 85, he is too old.

Gentlemen,

I think you are both wrong here.

1. The House passed Articles of Impeachment, they sent a list of what they thought were high crimes and misdemeanors worthy of Impeaching him to the Senate.
2. The Senate held an impeachment trial to see if the articles of Impeachment were true, correct, and worthy of removing President Clinton from office.
3. The Senate voted against the Articles of Impeachment.
4. If President Clinton (and President Johnson) had been found guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors, then he would have been Impeached and removed from office. Neither were Impeached.

Impeachment is the correct term only if the President (or for example, a Federal Judge) is found guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors and removed form office.

A President is never impeached by the House.

(Don Cherry should not have been fired for his comments, and President Trump is being put on trial by a corrupt Democratic Party on bogus charges, something Democrats were talking about before he won election in 2016. It is in essence an open revolt against the country that elected him).

The only thing that has gone too far in all of society, including sports, is political correctness and being “offended” by every little thing, person, word, color, object, statue and opinion.

Canada now has the same problem with its southern border

and the US is 10x the population/economy of Canada

- Symba007

yes, comparing the people coming to Canada from the U.S. is very simmilar to the people crossing illegally into the U.S. from Mexico. I am sure Droves of MS 13 gang memebers who have been deported repeatedly back to El Salvadore are sneaking back into the U.S. only to get to Canada.

These issues are not the same. https://www.foxnews.com/u...legal-immigrants-killings

I totally understand that. I hear a lot of people making that argument, and I agree. But, there's a big difference.

First is the fact that this was the last of MANY instances of him going off the rails, so to speak. I'm sure the guy had been warned at least a half dozen times or more over the past decade. You can only add so many seconds of delay to a live broadcast or release so many apologies on behalf of a man who clearly doesn't get it.

Lastly, It's a lot easier to remove a port broadcaster from their position than it is to remove a sitting Prime Minister from office. It just is. Removing a Head of State from office is a colossal task and holds major implications both domestic and abroad.

All that being said, I don't think Don should have been fired for this. I think he should have been let go over a decade ago when he totally lost touch with the modern game. He hasn't had a clue nor had he made any effort whatsoever to adapt or at the very least learn how to pronounce Casey Cizikas' name properly lol.
It was time, and unfortunately it was politics that broke the camels back and not job performance like it probably should have been.

Only in Canada do we hold a sports commentator more accountable than our own Prime Minister.

This was just an excuse to get him off the air. Alot of stuff he said over the years bothered many snowflakes. Network probably wanted to change commentator anyway

Don, could've used that moment and his soapbox as educational. Many newcomers do not know our customs, many use their school aged kids to learn of the "new" ways. If I am in a new country with a new language(let alone a new alphabet) it would take me time to figure it out. Cherry could've ranted about why we wear poppies, not who isn't wearing them. Sorry Don, you missed a great chance to evolve...alas you chose the other road.

They should have let him come back and apologize and then let him retire and float into the sunset. He’s an icon, regardless of some of the hate he gets.
