So, Zaitsev plays 25 minutes and is plus 1 in a 4-2 win. Chabot plays 21 minutes and is minus 1. Perhaps it is Zaitsev who benefitted from the separation?

Why would Smith be downgrading Chabot's playing time. We all know that playing time is what coaches use to reward good play.

I love Pageau. I think he also does a lot of stuff for this team off the ice.

They will get a good return if they trade him. But, I will hate to see him go.

A second and a decent defensive prospect like van somple or Aho OR maybe a first alone because it’ll hopefully be a late one this year. Always liked his game and he’s having a good start this year so maybe that’ll drive up his value a bit.

it'll take more than that. I think it was Freidman or Mackenzie, said he'd likely fetch a 1st and decent prospect.....and that was like a week ago, he's played even better since then.

Gotcha. He is a hard player to pin a value on. His overall numbers dictate he’s a good third liner but like you said he’s having a good start with which I’m assuming is due to increased ice time. That’s a guess on my part in all honesty. Not sure he would get that on a contending team with a set top 6? He would be a perfect fit for us and would most likely work well within Trotz’s system. I’m sure there would be quite a few contending teams pushing for him so it would most likely drive his value up...

Pageau is also a BEAST in the playoffs, one of the better 2-way forwards in the league.....he's exactly the type of player a team would want for a playoff run.

I agree that he's a 3rd line guy, but right now he's playing like a top line guy, and if he's still playing like that around the TDL, someone will overpay for him.

I mean... no. Plus/minus isn't particularly useful, *especially* when you're looking at it in such a small sample size.

You mentioned that shots on goal is something you look at. Last night Chabot's 5v5 shot share was 68.75% and Zaitsev's was 38.89%. From a scoring chance perspective, Chabot's 5v5 share was north of 76% while Zaitsev's was south of 25%.

Zaitsev isn't good, and wasn't good last night. Chabot and DeMelo together historically has been good, and was again last night.

It really is funny but I found Zaitsev had a pretty decent game- am I missing something? He was strong on the puck, led a few rushes, and looked smooth. Picked up an assist as well.

Am I in the minority of supporters? Is this a case where underlying stats are misleading?

There seems to be a lot of support for him on these boards, but it's a far more even split on Twitter.

I mean I can see that he has his warts, and he definitely had problems with Chabot. It could be the Ceci effect as I think he is a better player (if not a little bit!)

My take as relative outsider is that you're spot on with this. Ceci's failings are far more visible than Zaitsev's, even if at the end of the day they're equally destructive on a quantitative basis. Ceci's mistakes make the highlight reel, whereas Zaitsev's don't because he looks like he's moving his feet and doing a lot of the right things. I think there's a bias that's created out of this.

likely due to the fact that he was playing with Boro on the bottom pairing.....much easier matchups for the most part.

Zaitsev isn't a bad dman, he's just not a top pairing guy and it was obvious based on his struggles when he played there.

The team should sign Demelo to a 5 year extension if the price is right. The team has consistently good results when he's on the ice.

I'd be happy to see Pageau extended for 3 more years. I'd even be OK with a 5 year deal but I would expect a drop in performance starting in year 4. I'd rather see Tierney traded as I see him as a less effective player as he is not able to play at a high pace and not as good defensively.

Pageau would be a superb fit with Carolina, I love their hard working, assertive style of play. And they have two first round picks. Maybe they might offer up the higher pick (Carolina or Toronto).

Ideal scenario would be to trade him at the deadline for a 1st rounder + to let him play some meaningful hockey and a playoff run, and sign him back in the off season.

Local guy who steps up huge in the playoffs and play well both ends of the ice.

A centre who can play up and down the lineup is always a valuable commodity at the trade deadline, but if they get a 1st round pick in what is regarded as a very strong draft for Pageau, that will be a major win for Dorion.
