Don't confuse freedom of speech with freedom from consequences.

He can say whatever he likes. In fact now that he is not tied to any corporation or any affiliation that I know of, the consequences of those actions will be less fiduciary and more social.

While you represent or are affiliated publicly with a major corporation, your actions (or statements) can't diverge too far from a standard Code of Conduct or you're going to find yourself in the position where you are not free from consequences.

Don also has the benefit of having an audience anytime he wants to hold an event, have an interview, tweet... Whatever it may be.

Don had his choice at the end of the day and was in control of his own fate. Anyone pitching Don as a victim needs a smack upside the head. Don will be just fine.

that's just BS for most businesses, restaurants are closing because they can't find staff, same with coffee shops. This sounds like Cons PR lines....my family owns a few business and what's hurting them is lack of people wanting to working entry level jobs, not the carbon tax.

I don't disagree.

I think the hard part, and at first I had to figure out why I felt the way I was feeling, is that no matter how much you liked him (or didn't), Don Cherry is a significant part of our modern Canadian culture. Just like Tim Horton's coffee.

Tim Horton's coffee sucks now, but people still go.

It feels like Don Cherry should have been allowed to go out with some final broadcast, but maybe the problem is that Don Cherry sucks now, but people would still go.

My wife's friend went away for work for 7 days - while she was gone, her husband bought a dog that he told her was $4,000.

But he lied. It was $7,000. It doesn't have wheels or an engine or a computer built-in or anything. It's just a dog.

Because it's going around the internet that you're interested, you could buy a decent human for $7,000 I would imagine.

I can understand that perspective, but I think he could have gone on terms along those lines had he wanted to. He made the personal decision that standing by his words was more important to him than dictating what kind of fashion he wanted to go out on at the end of the day.

I've had my say, and you've had yours, and I get where you're coming from.

Ultimately, whether his rambling intended to settle on a divisive statement or not, it seemed to. He was offered a chance to apologize and make that clear - simply say, "I didn't intend for it to sound like that. We should all be honouring and respecting the sacrifice made by our Veterans and the very least you can do is purchase and wear a poppy."

He chose not to.

Initially I was upset because even if I don't much care for what he says, I respect the foundation that he built and the icon that he was in terms of Canadiana, and I didn't want him to go out like that. Upon reconsideration, though, I've come to accept that he went out on his terms, because he had the choice.

I don't understand the post firing outrage either. DonC said openly he didn't need or want to apologize. SportsNet moved on. DonC seems content with it... for me... move on. Done deal.

What's awful to hear is the level of spin from both sides of the debate - this isn't going to change anything significant in the Canadian cultural landscape - a guy lost his job for a legitimate reason. He said something which a large portion of the country felt was inappropriate. He got canned.


I does amaze me how many people just seem to be unable to let go of something which they themselves really have no material involvement. That goes for both sides of the debate - must be fragile opinions if they have to be debated to death. I don't understand what it is these debaters believe they are achieving? are they really expected to change anyone's mind?
