If Dubas would not allow him to talk to a player that upwards of 20 teams were interested in that would be retarded.

So Dubas does deserve credit?

Personally I would have used Barrie on the first unit at least sometimes. However, looking a the first PP unit who comes off? Someone is getting pissed off. Nylander? Marner? Barrie is a needless asset on the Leafs. Supply and demand.
- aminnes

Sure, we have Rielly and he's the #1 guy here, but what's wrong with having two guys that can quarterback a powerplay?

Shouldn't the coach know how/when to use his players? Or to play a player to their strengths?

I'm at the point where I'd welcome this trade:

Matthews + Nylander

for

Barkov + Ekblad

At this point, don't you have to assess anyone that's on the PP in order to try and find a fix? It's unbelievable how ineffective it is dating back to Christmas time last year.

If he allowed it, no, that's the least of his job.

If he didn't, he's a dumbass.

thank you for saying it;

Our PP really sucks, you know what will work? Trying the exact same thing over and over again.

I agree, but he didn't... Barrie is an upgrade on Gardiner and should be used as an offensive d-man, not asked to change his game and learn how to be a stay-at-home defenseman..

That's like asking Gauthier to center the 1st PP unit.

- PatC80

actually - that would be a hell of a good idea... the Goat on the PP... takes the faceoff and goes to the front of the net....

there's no one else going there now... would send a good message to the guys currently on the powerplay wouldn't it.

Babcocks been at 'put your best 5 offensive players out at once, have the point wing shots at the net and hack at rebounds' for about 12 months now.

Agreed.

Sometimes a weird change can just shake things up enough for it to work.

For example, you won't find a Habs fan that can explain to you why, but Joel Armia on the powerplay actually helps despite him never scoring.

the cap savings make that a good deal but they are losing talent. hope they get someone good with the money they save.

Yes.

Because no way in hell would Florida make that trade. Not a year ago, not now, not ever.

So yeah, it was pretty derp.

Panthers fans probably would be calling you a derp with his 5.9mil for 92 points.

He does play on the PP, just not the first unit. At some point the team has to find guys that can produce without playing with MM, AM, and JT.

But again, I would at least put him out there once in a while just to see what's up.

While Matthews in potential is a the best player - it would make Leafs directly a much better team.

How is that comparable?

Nylander's situation was way different than Barrie's.

- PatC80

a precipitous drop in measured performance... not similar at all.

the reasons are different... one happened because one guy signed a new contract... the other got traded...

but both put into situations that they couldn't perform in....

circumstances, sure.

blame the coach if you like, but some is certainly on the player... and some is on the GM - in each case

did you blame Babego when 70pt Nylander turned into 6 goal Nylander last season? was it Babcock's fault that Nylander was out of shape and missed camp?
- BorjeFan4Ever

No. It was Nylander’s fault. This isn’t the same scenario. Barrie is being made to change his playing style, and it’s hurting his production.

Ya. It looks like he is using Barrie as a normal defensive d man as that is what he needed and was not given. Just my theory.
