i'll say one thing about marner, I think he truly wants to win a cup in toronto...
nylander doesnt care , thats for sure....
I would trade nylander 1st and get that country club spoiled attitude kicked out the door fast..... - CarlitoBrigante
A few games back, Leafs scored the OT winning goal. Everybody on the bench was jumping and screaming, except Willie - he just stood there without a smile and stared...!
Anyone remember?

I haven't read it yet, but I watched some clips of Barrie last year, playing with Ian Cole, who's a underwhelming if not solid vet D, who plays similar to Muzzin, but (IMO) not as good.
The Avs thrived on a 5 man breakout with Barrie as a skating option through the neutral zone, when he could just be a puck hog and do good things with it. He was never great in his own end, but that's typically the case with all but the very best perennial-Norris defensemen, and why you pair them with guys like Muzzin.
Why would he all of sudden take a nose-dive after being a 60-point D man? He's being told to play in a way that's not conducive to success. He just didn't forget how to hockey overnight.
Babs finally got through to the team with his swinging center (Tavares kinda did that already, but Matthews and Kerfoot are for sure and didn't before... well, Matthews didn't) and being down in support in general, but that also means that the D aren't being active on the rush at all.
Think how many times Rielly has had a carry into the zone this year (few), something that he excelled at so much so that it basically was the core reason why he had Norris votes last year.
Gardiner is gone, and so are the stretch passes too, so that's playing into the lack of high risk/high reward chances a bit, but they need a coach who's going to play to their strengths, instead of trying to convert them into pawns playing into his vision of the team... a vision that's not in-line with what Dubas has built.
Say what you want about Kyle's vision (and GMs before him; this roster isn't entirely on him), but if you're not going to play this roster to their strengths, then you're not really giving the team a chance as a whole. - gravyface
some good points.
that article talks about Gardiner and the lack of stretch passes now. that was his bread and butter.
level headed looks at the team like this are better than the 1 line, fire the coach or the players quit Blame them.
Like I said over the last few days, this can be a bit of the coach and the GM and the players.

I dont. Great question.
I was always under the impression the Coach had the most input on the assistants and such, But I really dont know for sure - senstroll
I feel like new coaches get to pick their staff and then when they're in hot water their assistants can be the first fired and then management hires some assistants they prefer to maybe 'help' their coach out and or eventually replace him. That's the gist I get from it. Sweeney brought up Cassidy from Providence to be Julien's assistant and I'm pretty sure he would preferred they go a different route - RickJames77
I feel like the coach is probably the one who hires these guys as well. Really - it's the crap rolls downhill mantra in effect.
Also you should be hiring someone who meshes with your thinking. That said, I have this fuzzy recollection . . . and I don't remember who it was or even when it was, but I remember a time when an assistant was hired for Toronto (I think) and everyone was pretty sure they were hiring the guy's replacement for when they fired him.
There's this thing that Brian Burke had said that I've referenced a couple of times, but I firmly believe in it - which is that as a GM can't legitimately fire a coach if he doesn't give the coach the freedom to do his job. In other words, you can't tell him who to play or how to play them or deployment or anything else and then turn around and fire that coach for doing what YOU said to do.

exactly....it shows in the way he plays and his body language....the weak ass stick checks on defense are pathetic.... he avoids hitting at all costs ....
you trade him, not marner....even tho i think marner is overpaid by about $3 million...i'll take an overpaid player with a better attitude |

This was written after Hakstol was hired
https://theleafsnation.co...to-the-maple-leafs-bench/
It seems they are trying to "improve" the d through hakstol?
And its not working
and they are getting the exact results the Flyers did. - senstroll
That's . . . . unfortunate. I guess he has a chance to hit 31st with his PK plan now, so you know . . . good for him.
Of note: Florida still has the 4th best powerplay in the league even with Macfarlane gone, so maybe it wasn't all him, but still they should be far more effective than they are. |

Maybe the League has figured out the Leafs systems - senstroll
Never the players eh?
Lol
Could be both.
Weak selfish players failing to execute simple predictable systems. Recipe for disaster |

@PierreVLeBrun
87 overtime games through the quarter mark, the NHL says that's the most ever through this stage fo the season: PARITY.
Well...maybe not so much parity.
The NHL point system the way it is makes team play to get to OT or "not lose"
Its def a good strategy as the overall point % on the season lends to getting to OT and flipping a coin. |

The best thing that could happen is a blowout tonight in Vegas .... - CarlitoBrigante
Agreed. I said the same thing about Saturday.
I hope Babcock is fired because it will go one of two ways...
The team improves
The team does not improve and our soft, overpaid, lazy players will suddenly find themselves without an excuse.
Ideally Babcock gets fired, and calls out the players who are the problem. You know it won't happen, but it would be epic to hear what the coach is seeing out there.

I hope you're right. Plus, a little puck luck would be nice.. - PatC80
How about some goaltending.
Sorry but Ander5en lets in at least one brutal goal every game and our backups are non-NHL calibre. This team is too weak and fragile to survive that. |

Would you still finish your check or go all out, if you've stopped playing for your coach? - PatC80
Sure, that may be the "excuse", but there is NO excuse for that performance in front of your rookie goalie.
Sure, Babcock is a problem, but it goes way deeper than just him. |

some good points here
https://theathletic.com/1...ce/?source=shared-article
When you actually break down the video, the D are a problem, but not in the way you think.
there has to be a big coaching element resulting in the huge drop in goals/xgf
There is no way a team this talented should be losing the way they are - senstroll
Don't have The Athletic, but I think the highlighted is what is so frustrating.
MMN were better than this 2 years ago and it is not like ANYONE has aged out of their prime, except Spezza, and he certainly is not the problem.
Either we have the stupidest or the laziest and softest players in the league. It is pretty clear they all hate Babcock, but I doubt Babcock's "systems" teach them to leave people open in the slot, give up multiple odd-man rushes every period, or literally back away when an opponent is going after the puck...
