I dont really like it either but I do a bit more so than the shoot out. Both are gimmicky but at least the 3 on 3 still kind of resembles a team game instead of individual plays to end it.
I think 5 on 5 OT for 5 (or 10) mins is best and if they tie, they tie, and get 1 point each. - MattStrat
Each team gets a 5v4 for 2 minutes. Then if no one scores, each team gets a 5v3 for 2 minutes. Goalie has to switch handedness and defenseman need an eye patch over one eye and their skates must be untied. If nobody scores after the two PPs then Epstein didn’t kill himself. |

I asked the question of which division is strongest in the last comment section then posted this not realizing there was a new blog:
Metro - 229 points in 186 games so 1.23 standing points per game/ +22 goal diff
Atlantic - 208 points in 190 games so 1.09 standing points per game/ -15 goal diff
Central - 193 points in 167 games so 1.15 standing points per game/ +11 goal diff
Pacific - 218 points in 203 games so 1.07 standing points per game/ -20 goal diff
Yup...Metro is strongest.
Disclaimer: I did this for sh!ts and giggles and realize that there's a sh!t ton of factors and variables to consider in all of that hahah |

How do you decide which team gets the man advantage first? Home team?
EDIT: Coin flip. |

I just read the blog.
If anyone understands the good-backup-getting-starts-over-starter-dynamic it should be Murray. He and MAF had this relationship and they thrived. I dont think Jarry getting more starts will start any kinda feud or drama and Murray might even be better off for it. |

Honestly I dunno lol I just made it up on the fly. I didn’t really give it too much thought. Was just building based off of the college football OT where the teams get the ball in the offensive side of the field and try to score on one possession. |

I'll agree with this, if you have an uncontested entry, unless you're going for a line change, you should take it every time. But I don't think looking at zone entry percentage let's you know how clean the chance to enter is and thus if that was the smart play, so I don't trust the stat.
There was a site that used to track puck retrievals and Hornqvist at that time was in the 99th percentile in puck retrievals and exceptional in all possession stats, yet that isn't considered a possession game by many because of controlled entry.
I also don't think all players are equal at retrieving pucks on dump ins, nor are all defensemen as good at retrievals. I'd bet the retrieval rate against Maatta or JJ playing on his off-side last year was higher than a good entry rate percentage but it's not tracked. - Tojo.
This was from an older thread, but yeah, I agree. The stat tracking isn't clear what it's really tracking. I also agree that certain players are better or worse at retrieving and certain defenders are better or worse at exiting. It was a common strategy for teams to dump it into Green's corner. Likewise, I remember reading something about how Babcock had Lidstrom retrieve the puck every time, no matter side it was dumped in, because he was simply better at it. The NHL is probably the only league where dumping can be used as a strategy itself, since it's faster and the ice smaller, especially if you're able to pinpoint a defender who is struggling with it.
But in general, you never want to willfully give the puck up if it can be avoided, even if you got wings who are beasts at retrieval. |

5v5 for 10 minutes. then go to 3v3 until someone scores. shouldn't take too long.... |

Maybe I'm stretching here, but here me out...
Not all players shine at the same time. Some players blow their load in the beginning of the season, i.e. James Neal.
Some players don't really find their rhythm until the second the half of the season and looking at last year, Murray didn't really start finding his way until the second half and was a completely different player.

I got one better. Pick 3 fans from each team. Then do this from the other side of the rink:
If the fans fail, pick 3 players. |

Only thing I’d change is 5 minutes for each one. I’m sure due to tv scheduling adding too much time would be problematic. |

I thought they had discussed a 5 minute version of this before 3 on 3, then possibly shootout, and the nhlpa deemed it too much extra time and scrapped it. |

Not just extra time on the players and their travel plans but also extra time for workers at the arenas and time for hockey fans. That’s a big complaint with baseball right now is that it’s just too long. Most of us would probably love OT and a 3 hour hockey game, but many fans would not. They still leave early to try to beat commutes |

2 points for regulation win, go straight to a shootout, winner gets 1 point loser nothing. It's regular season it's gets it done fast and no loser points. Probably will make teams wanna win in regulation. |

The top six was great. The bottom six was horrible. Kahun Simon Horny had literally 0 shots for and 6 against in like 3 minutes of ice time. Horrendous. |

I also don't like the 3 on 3. It is exciting to watch I will give it that. I actually love watching it when Pittsburgh is not involved, but when they are I stress out hard. I don't think it is a true representation. NHL Hockey is a 5 vs 5 game, and when you play the game as it is meant to be played, it is the superstars that shine, and the team effort that drives the goal scoring.
In the 3 on 3, it isn't about who has the best team, it is about who has the best handful of young fast skaters that can find breakaways that would never happen 5 on 5.
At 5 vs 5, Sidney Crosby is 5 times the player that Michael Grabner is.
At 3 vs 3, Michael Grabner is an NHL superstar. |

I agree. Last night pitt was lucky to win in ot. Although they did have a couple good chances earlier, Calgary had some extremely good chances and fortunately either missed or bobbled the puck. Ot just doesn’t seem to be their game. Their poor line changes and being in too deep when a dman blows a shot is way too common.

4th line was pretty solid, especially once Simon switched there. Think I've seen enough of him at center though. Blueger and ZAR were not on the ice for a scoring chance against all game.
3rd line is just mixed parts until we get a center back. |

Is CF% based on 3 minutes the sole metric you're using in this evaluation? |

I didn't think there could actually be anything worse than the current OT/SO system used now in the NHL. This is.
Injuries are definitely a concern, so go to a 10 minute OT... maybe even one full period... and if nobody scores, call it... um... hmm... a tie.
For now, I suppose 3 on 3 is ok... the SO SUCKS. |
