From ProHockeyRumors.com

Since the promotion of former head coach Sheldon Keefe to the same position with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the AHL affiliate Toronto Marlies have been searching for his replacement. The team has decided to go outside of the organization to tab their next bench boss, a rare move in-season, and have announced that Greg Moore has been named head coach. Moore was hired away from the USHL’s Chicago Steel midway through his second season with the team.

Moore, 35, is very familiar with developmental hockey. A young head coach, Moore was himself an NHL prospect not long ago. The Maine native played for the U.S. National Team Development Program in the early 2000’s and then played his college hockey at home at the University of Maine. He was drafted by the Calgary Flames after his freshman year, but his rights were traded to the New York Rangers before he turned pro. Moore made his NHL debut with the Rangers in 2007-08 overall made ten NHL appearances with the Rangers and Columbus Blue Jackets over five pro season in North America. He also played a leadership role with nearly every AHL club he played for. Moore moved to Germany in 2011 and extended his playing career another four years before calling it quits in 2015. He immediately jumped into the coaching ranks, becoming an intern assistant coach with the USNTDP. After two seasons as an intern, he became full-time in 2017-18 only to be named head coach for USHL rival Chicago a year later.

Moore is well-regarded among young NHL coaching prospects. His Steel team went all the way to the Clark Cup in his first season and recorded a 52-25-5 record overall in 82 games with Moore behind the bench. His name had already been in the mix for possible NCAA openings this off-season, but he gets an even better deal with an AHL promotion mid-season. The Leafs organization has seemingly had an eye on Moore for some time, as they invited him to be a guest coach at development camp this summer and worked quickly to hire him just ten days after the firing of Mike Babcock and promotion of Keefe. Moore will be in the spotlight with the Marlies, but has a bright future ahead of him following this major career move.

Gee, I would have thought the Hawks could have used this guy somewhere in their organization.

Not qualified, he never coached in a 2nd Tier European league. Pass!

It's that time of the year. Hopefully no one else on the team picked it up.

I was watching the Patriots-Texans game last night and the announcers said that a bug was going around the Patriots team last week. They flew the sick players on a separate flight to Houston. First time I heard that happening.

To me, if #19 reverts to offensive form of two years ago, no matter what happens anywhere else on the roster, this team is not making the playoffs. As much as everyone loves Kane with Debricat, Kane needs to move back with Toews and we need to see if Strome-Debricat can recreate the magic from last year sans Kane.

Otherwise, against a decent defensive team it will take the goaltenders standing on their heads every game to make this work. Thus far, the goaltending has overall been very good (this past weekend notwithstanding) and the team is still looking from outside for the wild card let alone the top 4 spots in the division.

The truth is, we probably all overestimated how close the Hawks were to being a playoff team - despite all the positive moves, and there were a number of them, the starting point was a mess.

I heard the separate plane thing too, I forgot to ask when I heard it. I'm glad someone watched & remembered that bit of info. I had never heard of that before either.

Talking about the Hawks is depressing so I'll talk about the Avs instead.

WOW! I really like Makar - ROY this season and future Norris winner. Very dynamic player and he's got enough size and snarl to put his body on you too. Future very bright for that guy. Then you add Byram next season and along with Girard they have 3 exciting PMDs to go along with a couple road graders with Zadorov and Graves.

Then, a top line of MacKinnon, Rantenan, and Landeskog and plenty of other offensive punch with Kadri, Compher, Donskoi, Burakovsky and others and that's a heckuva forward group. They have a couple guys in Jrs and college that should be coming online in the next couple years too.

I'm not sold on their goaltending but if you put Lehner on that team I think they would give Boston, Washington and St. Louis a run for their money.

Makar was drafted in 2017. That was the year the Avs had by far the worst record in the league but got the 4th pick due to the lottery. It worked out well for them. Hischier, Patrick, Heiskanen selected 1,2,3. Pettersson 5th.

I'd like to get Strome, Caggiula, & Keith back asap.

Keith's injury typically takes at least a month. Crow missed half a season with a concussion. What is your plan B?

Definitely not the magic bullet, but I would try it again (1988, that is), since nothing was clicking at the beginning of the year. Worth it to see if the rust being shaken off (has it?) changes their success rate together.
- pdx2ord

Somebody mentioned last blog Toews had glazed look in his eyes like "I can't believe how small and slow I am?". I saw the same thing at the Carolina game in Raleigh. Unless something changes there nothing is changing. Rebuild and buyouts start your engines. Welcome to the LA Kings nightmare.

Great write up Tyler. I was very optimistic about Chicago looking at the moves they made because on paper this team should be much better.

Everything hinged upon the players who stepped up last year having career years doing the same this year.

Saad and Nylander playing away from toews produced results now their non existent.

Kubalick is mia

Toews is washed up here are his numbers and for what Chicago is paying him , clearly he isn't remotely living up to his contract.

26 GP
4 goals
9 assists
13 points
-1

That's pathetic and the excuses and lack of emotion shown by toews are no longer can be excepted.

JC while he might be a very knowledgeable guy with all his analytics
His ability to coach and get these guys motivated and playing better is non exsistent.

It's time for Rocky to Fire Stan and rebuild this team.

Even if Chicago made a wildcard spot they haven't shown they can play consistent and keep up with contender teams

This is a move for the off-season, can Bowman this spring, get a new GM and let him clean house.

I agree walleyeb1. The question is do you fire Stan now before the trade deadline or at the end of the season if that's the ultimate end game?

Rocky needs to allow any new GM full authority to clean house including the core players.

Does anyone know what current unemployed GM candidates are out their and available?

Debrincat will be fine. Goal scorers go thru these types of lulls/snakebitten. Hell, he hit the post/missed by inches the other night

Hes still getting chances and he still makes the right plays with the puck. For example, his pass to Maata vs DAL on the 2 on 1 for a goal. In hearing him about the play...he noticed the D man cheating to him and he made a great pass over to Maata. Instead of being frustrated and shooting (knowing hes slumping in the goal dept), he still made the right play.

He can very easily get 10g in the next 10gms and will be at 15g in 35gms (as goal scorers do). Being a younger player he just has to go thru this and keep doing the right things.

It doesn't matter what authority is granted to the GM when the entire core has NMC's. Not that they cannot be moved, but the fact is that it is not simply up to the team or the GM. The players themselves have an immense amount of control available to them. Not to mention, if you are going to move them, it is horrible asset management to simply dump them for "picks and stuff". You better get a haul back for them. As poor as some of them are playing, they are still some of the best (if not the best) players on this team.

Another from John Dietz:

The Blackhawks had 29 shots on Saturday.
20 Came from just 4 players (Toews, DeBrincat, Kane & de Haan had 5 each).

WTF was everyone else doing?

Sounds like a plan, but exactly who would you want running the club? It's not like there are a whole bunch of great GM's out there just champing at the bit waiting for a new gig. The good ones (and the re-treds like Chiarelli) are scooped up pretty fast. Same with coaches. You get a Hitchcock, McLellan, Carlyle, Boudreau, etc. Heck, a year ago (maybe even a week ago) anyone would have taken Babcock or Peters to coach.

If they are going to actually do it, then think outside of the box. Get a Hunter or someone who is respected but hasn't done it before. Get someone that understands the current trends of what the league and style of play has become.

Good luck clearing house when this team has more non-movement clauses than any other team in the NHL. The Hawks cannot afford to sweeten deals anymore by throwing in a top young player like they did with Bickell and Teravainen. The Hawks are destined for average teams until Toews and Keith come off the books. Kane I am fine with, plus at some point Seabrook can be bought out, however that will not be for awhile yet either. Welcome to AVERAGE to BELOW AVERAGE folks!!

I think the Hawks "next move" should be to find a LW to play with Dach - which is why I was curious about Drouin in MTL - or maybe even Kreider in NY. Maybe even figure out a way to get Hall.

If it ends up costing Baudin +, so be it. Just dont move Dach or Boqvist

Toews best role at this point is to put him in the best D line and play him against the other teams top line. It's a broken record, but slot the players appropriately and put them in positions to succeed

Playing Carpenter with Kane and Debrincat? Not sure about that.

But if they could land that LW for Dach, then the team would begin their transition
