The only way he gets paid is if he sues. Pandora's box opens up if that comes to light... Can you imagine the implications?
Every player who ever felt they weren't treated right will start suing their former coaches? Kennedy and Fluery didn't sue and I see that as a clear case for multiple suits... Dangerous precedent!?! |

He's hired a law firm... how much do you wanna bet he's going to sue for potential lost wages.
It is a dangerous precedent and will sink the league. You won't be able to look at someone the wrong way without the threat of being sued.

I think he's going to have a hard time there - given the number of organizations he went to and that he got a legitimate chance at the NHL level. It would, I think, be pretty hard to say that his career was derailed to the point of lost wages.
He might be able to claim something related to mental health etc, and the likely result is a settlement no matter what anyways. Smart of him either way to have legal representation there. |

I would think the NHL will settle so they can do damage control and sweep it under the rug. It's good the he came out and spoke up but its clear as to why he did it.
I look at someone like Mitch Marner speaking as being more genuine about it and not trying to leverage it for financial gain. |

Well, he better get in there while there's still something left ! According to the article, we're entering a decline in professional sports. Who knows what Aliu wants to accomplish but having a lawyer is a must. He's already destroyed the career of Bill Peters. He'd be wise to vet anything he has to say from now on through someone. The NHL has a team of lawyers on their side and maybe someone there or even his agent told him he'd better Lawyer up. |

Essentially he is black balled (no pun intended) from pro hockey because of this. |

The NHL needs to be extremely careful on how they treat him. They better make sure they are beyond fair in every step they take.
Also, I wonder if the NHLPA is involved...I would think so. |

It's going to be a poop show no matter how you slice it... but I can guarantee if they cut a cheque there will be strings attached to it. |

There is probably one solution to this going forward if coaches cant be firm as coaches with players not performing. Time to get rid of guaranteed contracts. Then the coaches dont have to slap the player or call them stupid lazy fcking boneheads.
They sit them & then if they continue to sh!t the bed on the ice, they are released & the contract is done. We'll see a stoppage in the league but maybe the players union should think about how they want this to play out. This unprecedented firing of a coach should be enough to smarten up the old school coaches & hiring of old school coaches. I dont see Babcock getting another coaching job & a few other guys may need to find some scouting jobs (like Hartley), heard he was an SOB to some players.

Maybe... but it's going to be tough.
Chris Chelios and Johan Franzen both came out against him. |

He hasn't been blackballed because of this. No one was paying him to play hockey this season and he's played for 14 teams over 6 seasons since the Flames let him go.
Sure, it sucks what happened with Peters, but he also needs to take some personal responsibility. He wasn't good enough to make the NHL. We've probably all had poopty bosses at one point or another and most of the time you just have to deal with it. Were the 20 or so other coaches he's played for also all racist and had it out for him.
Being your own person and standing up for what you believe in is great and all, but hockey is a team game. You have to find the balance to be able to fit into the team environment.
I'd have a lot more sympathy for Aliu if he was just telling his story and not trying to blame Peters for ruining his shot at the NHL. |

Why would they cut him a cheque? What would he even sue the NHL for? The Peters stuff happened in the AHL. Peters didn't coach a game after Aliu's allegations. How did the NHL wrong Aliu in any way? Is he going to sue them for not immediately banishing him for the league?
The best he can hope for is for the league to hire him as some kind of consultant, but with the size of the chip on his shoulder, I don't see that happening.

Personally, I think Marner, Matthews and Nylander all leveraged the Babcock relationship when they negotiated their contracts... personal take though, nothing to base that on |

Well, given that he played all of 14 games in the ECHL last year, I don't think this is a legitimate concern at this point. 6 years ago... maybe. |

Yeah, guys like he and Torts/Keenan always find their way back... at least Torts has grown a little bit over the years, I don't know if Babcock will do the same.
Betting he's back at some point though |

Well - to be somewhat fair to the kid, having a coach yell something racist, not apologize for it and then draft a letter to the Blackhawks asking he be sent down seems like a pretty decent case for a coach that had an axe to grind and grind he did.
Don't disagree on the rest, I don't think he was a legit NHL calibre player at any point, but was decent enough that the Flames gave him 7 games where he picked up 3 points... in today's world, that's a $4M/year player |

In the US, where there is a will to sue, there is a way... a decent lawyer will argue that the team knew or ought to have known and that they may have been complicit in sending him down as a way or burying the incident.
In a country where you can sue for anything on the list below, a case of racism and potential employer abuse can easily go somewhere...

All we really know is Peters said the garbage he said. Peters said he apologized, so maybe he did, maybe he didn't. It also makes zero sense that Peters would have drafted a letter to get Aliu demoted. This was in 2010. Everyone had a phone on them at all times. By Alui's own admission he rebelled against Peters and told him to eff off during practice weeks later on something completely unrelated.
I'm not defending Peters, but Aliu should have taken getting away from him as a blessing and busted his ass to be the best player in the ECHL. He was given plenty more shots in the AHL away from Peters and still did nothing.
Having to deal with Peters would have sucked, but Aliu didn't put in the personal work necessary to make it to the NHL.

He has no chance of winning that, unless the lawyers are doing it pro bono, it would cost him more money than he probably has, and the NHL would have to fight it because it would open too many cans of worms of disgruntled ex-players who want to blame their lack of success on someone else. |

Damn, looks like Akim is looking for his pay day.
Didn't someone mention earlier that he was a pretty poopty team mate? Poor attitude?
If that is the case I am sure there would be some players that would speaj k out against him. |
