Bill Meltzer: Wrap:Flyers Drop 3-1 to Decision to Arizona - bmeltzer
Bill,
Can you explain the Stewart signing? If he is an NHL caliber player why wasn't he dressed tonight? If a player doesn't bring skill to the team that can be used in actual games what is the point?
Being a great locker room guy and all the other "intangibles" would of ben evident if he was kept on his PTO and paid a per diem. Why did Chuckles sign him? It seems that it is no longer to play him. Did they all of a sudden realize he isn't an NHL caliber player? |

He makes just a shade over the NHL minimum, practices as the 8th D although he's been a forward all his career. Is great with the rookies in particular. He's not hurting the team. |

Frost is struggling but I would keep him right where he is. Hopefully he’s in the video room with therein. Give him some more time but how much more? Kid needs to have more urgency in his game |

Why is this a concern? I don't get it other than it's a chance for you to use the Chuckles name.
NoPa specifically called out how much of a help Stewart has been.

I don't see a lack of urgency in him since his recall. Pacing dropped a hair-- nothing alarming -- for a few games. Hasn't been an issue the last two. If anything, tonight he was over-shooting and forcing things a bit. |

Could he not do all those things on a PTO? Regardless of his salary, it is a daily cap hit the team carries, a roster spot, and a contract slot. All of those things affect the team, don't they? On top of that, they called up another player, using a roster spot, LTIR, and cap space to keep him as a healthy scratch. Is that a good use of assets?
I would think not |

Why isn't it a concern to you? He could provide all the things Bill listed, he could also hold Nopa's hand as he crossed the street, or whatever benefit he has said Stewart provides, on a PTO, could he not? |

On an extended PTO, you really aren't part of a team. It's just different. |

Can't complain about tonight's game at all. Flyers controlled the game essentially. Arizona got their goal and protected it. Keumper played well but we definitely had our opportunities which were missed. Play like that and most games you will win. I personally thought that was a BS call on Hayes at the end, OEL did it to him first then felt then contact and made it look good....Not the reason they lost though...On to the next one. |

So does that goal by Kessel actually add to his 5v5 numbers despite it being a PP ENG? |

Frost made some questionable decisions. Was up on the revolution row seats and it was apparent he (and others) were forcing passes when lanes were not open. The coaching staff will get it handled frosts skill set is obvious and once he and g are on the same page Watch out |

Did he also leave the ice and head to the dressing room to really sell the call as well? I agree he cross checked Hayes, but Hayes has to be smart and cross check a dude in the neck when you're down a goal late. |

If Stewart is the biggest issue at this point in the year we’re doing just fine. I personally like him being on reserve for the team |

The call on Hayes was definitely the correct call. Hayes cross checked him at the base of the neck causing OEL's face to drive into the dasher area. It was a dumb and careless play on Hayes part. A player doesn't leave the the game to "make it look good".

I have zero problem with Stewart. I watched Riley Cote play for two or three seasons on a contending team. |

I agree. Dumb play by Hayes. You would hope they call both but still unnecessary and dumb by Hayes.
Overall, I don't like that they lost but I feel they played the right way. |

That 1-punch TKO on Andre Roy was fantastic, as was Roy's meltdown on the bench. |

It surprised me that the fans were booing them at the end of the second period. I get the PP was having trouble with zone entries, but the period and previous PP's we dominated and had excellent chances. Their goalie played a great game. And if you watch Jake was not pleased at the booing. I get they are professional athletes and booing will happen, but when they are playing like that i feel it is unwarranted. |

Yes...my favorite one punch is when young Kane put down Cooke. Also always enjoyed watching bieska superman punch everyone.....you think people would've caught on sooner. One of the ones who did is our own Anderoff. first fight with him he got one punched...next time he was ready for it. |

I cannot believe what Joe Thornton did to Mrazek. You should show some respect to opposite goaltender. It is never fair 1 on 1. Mrazek was absolutely right to be pissed off after Joe's late poke check as the puck was frozen. In old times you would be scared like poop to do that to goaltender after play like that. And then he even crosses a line and punches him in a face?? when Mrazek stands up to him yet clearly not seeing what could come back.
Absolute disgrace from Thornton and shame noone bit the poop out of him. |
