Staal is the 2019-2020 version of marik malik. Hes surely not what he used to be but the idea that he is the worst defenseman on the team is non sense. That title belongs to skjei - TrueBlue9182
Skjei has been bad but is improving. His physicality is noticeable and he is putting up some points. |

With the logjam at d, what’s more likely? Moving on from a current roster guy (Skjei, ADA, Smith, Staal, etc.) or a prospect waiting in the wings (Hajek, Miller, Keane, Nils, Rykov, etc.)?
I could see one of those prospects going, paired with Georgiev, in a package for an NHL ready winger. - Bean_Dip
I think at some point, a prospect will be sure moved. If even half of our D prospects are good, there isn't any room for all of them long term. It's why you can't ever have too many prospects at one position, because you can always deal from a position of strength. |

Yeah, I thought he was pretty good last night.
Then, there was a play in the 3rd when he was in the corner as the puck went behind our net. Trouba was covering in front and Skjei bolted to the front of the net as fast as he could, where Trouba already was, and allowed the guy behind the net tons of time and space with the puck!
Nothing came from it, but it was a very odd play by him. |

The Avs game and last night make me think this core is closer to competing than not. Like MDW mentioned, there’s always going to be stinkers as they grow, but they’re close. With that in mind, I think we see some prospects moved soon. |

I think the problem with Skjei isn't that he's bad, it's just he's getting paid as a top pair guy when on a good team he'd be one of the best 5th D in the league. He's basically kevin Klein with a bigger contract. |

Yeah, no doubt. However, what made Hank great is what is going to be that he won't do that. To be a hall of fame athlete, you need a certain mentality. It's why guys like Boggs and Mays play well after their prime for different teams, and we watched Fatso struggle mightily with the Blues. These guys just can never not compete, guys like Mariano that retire when they are still pretty great are more than the exception than the norm.
I do hope Hank announces next year as his last year. The guy deserves a farewell tour. As much as this would have been the perfect year to let him play mostly the home games, maybe that's the plan next year to give Hank a lions share of home starts, and let Igor handle the road games. - 2sticks1puck

I do think Skjei's tradeable, at the draft or over the summer
I think a team will still look at his size and skating ability, his point total this year is going to be decent too, despite the contract they'll be a market |

There's been some metrics that suggest Hank hasn't been as bad as it seems. There are plenty of teams that are going to make the playoffs with worse goalies than Hank, I don't doubt we could with him and Georgi/Igor. Fixing the defense so we aren't giving up 50 shot attempts a game would make whoever is back there look better by default. |

For sure he is. Teams will also look at how Pionk looks better away from us than with us and might reason it's the team making him not as good rather than vice versa. I do think we still might either have to retain salary and/or possibly take a not so hot contract back. Maybe we could also do a Spooner/Strome type deal where it's one underachieving guy for another and hope we find some lightning in a bottle again. |

you really see the different when Georgiev and Igor play how much better they handle the puck though
for a group of defensemen who need all the help they can get back there, Hank makes it worse sometimes |

I think I said this a couple days ago: Shesty's puck handling is going to be a real weapon for us. If he hit's Zib or Panarin in stride, it's going to be hard for the other team to defend. |

He's not as bad as everyone thinks. He's also not playing often enough. Like it or not Hank is likely here no matter what.
I was looking at the prelim cap numbers for next year. How much might the cap go up?
Right now there is about 15.6m if there is no increase. I am figuring 7m a year for Kreider and 6m for ADA(If signed long term). That chews up 13m right there. that leaves 2.6m to maybe 4-5m for resigning the rest. Ryan Strome is also due money. 6.5m? Do they bridge one or both of Strome and/or ADA?
Trade Buch and let Fast walk? What about Brendan Lemieux?

Those are all valid points. It is night and day when you have a puck handling goalie. Hank is just plain bad at it. I often wonder what could have been if he could handle the puck. |

Offer him an 8.5 million dollar job in the front office for a year - nyrangers9479
Under the rules, is something like this even possible? |

Thought the same thing, but teams are getting away with players saying they’re allergic to their jerseys. If Hank retired I don’t see why we couldn’t hire him for something else? |

That Shattenkirk buyout number is (frank)ing hideous. That is one I will question forever. |

Jim is saying the Rangers would need a 2nd which they don't currently have for this year. Unless a team might take one from another year. |

they needed to get through this season, the buyout was great for this year
and if they didn't buy him out, he would have been 6.5 million cap hit next year anyway
and he would have been in the way of Fox and Tony D |
