Not to nitpick because that was a great play but that was Howden who let the puck through his legs. Panarin was behind ADA preparing for the normal breakout where he follows up from behind

I really just don't see Hank retiring, and beyond the cap that doesn't bother me too much. I think he's valuable to keep around while Shesty gets his footing in the league as a starter and Georgie can bring us back some needed assets at forward. Staal on the other hand has watched the game pass him by unfortunately and while he's admittedly playing pretty well this year, I don't know that he's going to get a contract after this one, whereas someone will sign Hank for less money for sure. So Hank would be giving up multiple years as opposed to one by Staal.
- SkjeiStadium

I agree, I don't see Hank retiring at all. He still can play but just not at the level he used to. With a family firmly entrenched in NY I also can't ever see him waiving his NMC.

Agreed I think he finishes out this contract and then most likely resigns for one or two years at like $1M per as a full blown backup to Shesty

That is my ideal scenario. Though I think Hank is better as a starter and might not do well in a backup role.

Well he might not have many other options and again he is a big family man so he might take less and stay here even in a backup role. I would love to see Hank retire a lifetime Ranger, not often it happens anymore for a all timer to play his whole career in one place.

He's definitely always played better when he starts most of the games but at this point his days of starting 50+ games is over. I think he'd rather be in NY as a backup than lets say Colorado as a starter, despite Colorado giving him the better chance at a cup. If he sticks around here long enough as a backup he may just get his name on the cup afterall

My ideal scenario is that Hank and Staal retire, Buch and Skjei are traded, Kreider signs a contract for a dollar more than he is making now.

We got lucky twice (Naslund, Drury) with players retiring and coming off the cap. How about Hank & Staal both go out after this year?
- B2B76

Assuming my scenario where Staal retires, that would give us $21.3M next year, not accounting for any changes in cap.

Kreider - $7M
ADA - $6M
Strome - $5M
Lemieux - $2.5M
Fast - $2M

That's $22.5M. So we'd either need to let Fast go, or hope the cap goes up roughly $1M which is very possible.

That would leave us with essentially the same team as this year, swapping Staal for Hajek, and hopefully Kravtsov in place of McKegg.

Rangers have 4 more games until their bye week, I am sure they'll actually send Igor back down to Hartford after those 4 games, and Igor is still supposed to be the AHL all star goalie

Maybe they should consider sending Kakko down, but I think 10 days off may be better for him than anything

Wolfpack have two games he could play in during the Rangers break, January 24th and 25th

all star game for AHL is the 26th

I don't know for sure obviously, but people keep talking about Hank retiring and I think it's more likely that Staal does. The guy has played 13 years, sustained some pretty brutal injuries and made $50M throughout the course of his career. His game has been on a downward trajectory the past few years (admittedly he is playing better this year) and I don't think anyone is going to sign him once this contract ends. He would "only" lose $3.2M next year if he retired, which could be recouped in a front office job and would give him the ability to go out in good graces with the fans.

This is all obviously conjecture (and wishful thinking) but it does make some sense. To me at least...

I think the time off for Kakko is more important than whatever confidence he'd get in the AHL. Like I said in a previous post I think he looks tired. They should let Igor go play in the All Star game. As much as some players don't care about that stuff he earned it which is a big accomplishment in his first year in NA and they should allow him to go and soak that in. Then they should recall him the next day because I want to see him back in the Rangers net.

starting January 31st, the Rangers have 17 games between 1/31 and 3/1

that's a lot of hockey

February is jam packed

I agree, Kakko should rest up

Disagree.
Adam Huska or Tyler Wall will both be a full year older and one of them should be backing up the Czar.

You could show the guy a little more respect. I get that his time is up here, but he’s 99.9% responsible for 10-15 years of great NYR hockey.

He should have 30 retired the moment he hangs them up

There’s no way in hell the rangers can give Kreider 7 mil. If that what it takes to get him to sign again then sorry let him go. I don’t care what he can get on the open market , it’s too much for a power forward. Fans have been say for years so and so would get that on the open market, that has screwed the rangers more than once

Optimal scenario: Staal retires and becomes D coach, thereby freeing us of Ruff.

I also wouldn't give Kreider 7 years, 5 maybe.
