Haha, Marchand!

Take the W and move on. Hart looks impressive in shootout, calm. A treat to watch.

I'm happy for the win and the 2 points, but watching Marchand whiff on the shootout really put a smile on my face.

I was ecstatic when that rat bastard started almost all the way back at his own goal to get a ton of speed and then forgot the puck! Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy

When the defense activates, we are one of the best teams in the league. When the defense back skates and waits for forwards to back check, we are boring and average.

Fear is what keeps this team from achieving.

I agree. At times, the Flyers are like spectators. Stay involved, and get back to the constant attacking of the puck, and there will be a lot more wins (even in April!)

And the one defenseman who plays the most scared or who get in his own head is currently injured. I love Ghost and I dont want to trade him, but this injury for him is bad timing for him. The team is getting an extended look at how the defense looks without him. And in those 3 games we've hung with Tampa and have beaten two top teams

Yes, they've won, but the defense as a whole looked terrible last night.

Also, this is like saying the Penguins don't need Crosby because they've been playing so well without him.

Edit: I'm not saying you're wrong that he gets in his own head, but I just don't think a 3-game home sample (they played even better at home WITH HIM in the lineup) is a be-all/end-all evaluation.

I still think Ghost has a place on the team, if he can get that confidence back. I really think that's what it is. If he can plan effective 4, 5 , 6 dman minutes and QB the PP like he used to, I think that's fine. He's never going to be a defensive stud, but if he can contribute on O like before, he's very useful.

Peaks and valleys.

At least they showed some grit last night.

Good move Marchand.

I don’t think the defenseman are choosing to play scared. I think the coaches are telling them when they are allowed to be aggressive. But to find out we would need to ask the coaches and players and believe they are answering honestly. I don’t know if I could do that in this case.

It is a very small sample size, but the games without him continue for 2+ more weeks. I guess I meant more this could be the start of the extended look without since he's been involved in trade rumors since last year. See Crosby is hands down the Pens best player, but when you consider Ghost this season, it could be argue he's been our worst or one of the worst dmen. And I hate to see it because I am a believer Ghost can return to his old form. he showed some glimpses of hope earlier on, but hasn't put it all together (yet). I hope he does

I agree and I like AV. But the “ferda hockey” answers are so ingrained in all these guys that it’s hard to know what the truth is.

Yes, it's a look. But them winning does not equate to them playing well defensively. Last night being a prime example. I'm not saying Ghost is a defensive stud, or that he hasn't struggled; I'm not that him being out is not necessarily the cause of them winning.

And the reason I mentioned Crosby is because the Pens have had an extended look at life without him and it's yielded good results, which is pretty much what you insinuated with Ghost out (have beaten 3 top team without him).

Few thoughts on the ability to make trades.

Maybe we all know this but never said allowed, what hurts this team in term of trades are injuries to trade about assets like Ghost and maybe Patrick. Large contracts for players who are too inconsistent like Voracek and JvR. We know who we want to keep in such players like Couturier, Provorov, Konecny, Sanheim and Hart. We’re also tied up because of a signing like Kevin Hayes. So what’s left?

I look at Ottawa who might not make the players and have major assets that I want like Pageau or DuClair. The question becomes, what could we possibly give up to get them? It’s very frustrating because while we’re a good team, we have a lot of garbage.

Top contending teams who are in "win now" mode could likely offer a better package for rentals like Pageau/Duclair that they Flyers should be willing to trade.

If they're sellers, I'd be willing to give up more for Virtanen from Vancouver. He's an upcoming RFA and seems to have finally remembered how to play hockey.

Hagg had a bad game IMO, Thought Friedman was good. As Bill said both teams were sloppy. Flyers need to clean up their play in their own end. Even though I am calling out Hagg, I noticed plenty of Provorov turnovers in our own end as well. Flyers gave Boston some easy goals, they repaid us by giving us some lucky ones

The pageau rumour intrigues me. I would love to have him, but if they are shopping him, it's going to be a bidding war that we'd have to give up major assets to win. I am not sure what Chuck has planned. If he is under order to go for it this year, I would be surprised because even with Pageau, winning one round is likely the ceiling. We have to assume that Patrick is done for the year and we know Lindblom is. This severely limits our ability to know what we have as a team moving forward, and for that reason, I'd be conservative at the deadline.
