It happened against the team closest to them in the standings. A team that hasn't won three in a row all year. One of the most important games so far this year and the Leafs simply sh!t the bed.
- winsix

Sure and the only reason the Leafs were close to them in the standings was because they went on a 11 game point streak just before that.

That game is over now and it is about how they react to it and they are 1-0-0 so far.

I am happy.

the Florida game was bad, every mistake made ended up as a goal against. The Leafs actually played well against Florida.. These types of games happen sometimes.

Boston got shutout by CBJ and I don't here RJ complaining about Marchand whiffing on that shootout attempt..

Fans are too hard on the Leafs sometimes.

Sure get frustrated at the time but after the fact realize poop happens.

Anything less than 82-0-0 in regular season, 16-0 in the playoffs is unacceptable.

They dominated them until it was 6-1.

I don’t judge the game the same when it’s 6-1 with 10 mins left...you are welcome to but I just don’t.

It’s human nature to take your foot of the gas and Freddy has been sucking lately so he let a few goals in.

I’m happy with the game. I don’t garbage time goals too far.

- Santo_44

i'm slowly changing my expectations with this team.

i don't give a crap if Freddy let's in 3 goals. leafs are scoring 4/game since keefe.

if 3 is the new normal, freddy will have the odd game where he lets in 5/6. who cares. every goalie has the odd game where they let a few in above their average.

With the way they play they will make the odd mistake and will look silly...They have admitted it.

But their record shows that it has been working.

I think it has a lot to do with fans look at too many games in a vacuum. Detractors will simply look at the florida game and then forget other good teams get wrecked too.

Nobody poop on Tampa for having a really bad start to the season even though they won poop last year and haven't won anything with the core group either. They went to the conference finals a few years ago I think? Like people talk as if the team is a champion of some sort.

I commented that I have concerns that the Leafs haven't bought in to the system entirely yet. When things get comfortable, they get lazier. I do believe that good teams that know how to apply repeatable success don't do that. I have no evidence or anything. It's just one of those things you believe because sports pundits and other leaders around these games are always saying it.

That said, winners get their ass handed to them, too.

The Washington Capitals won the cup in 2018. They lost to the Penguins 7-4 on February 2, 2018. They lost to the Blackhawks 7-1 13 days later.

In 2017, the Penguins lost to the Blue Jackets 7-1, and then lost 3 in a row a week later just after New year's. For the most part, they were close in most of their games, though.

In 2016, the Penguins worst loss was 6-2; most of their losses were by a goal. That team was in it to win it.

I think the keys are . . .Are they trending the right way at the right time? Are they getting better? I'm partially optimistic, because I like that Freddy may be getting his slump out of the way and we can roll on from there.

Freddy needs to play like Grant Fuhr did for the Oilers, just make one more save than the other goalie.

So here's my "I'm chugging blue Kool-aid as I type this" take:

When the Leafs get caved in, which is far too often this year, it's not a lack of talent. It's almost always a lack of effort.

You can't up your talent game in the playoffs. But you can force yourself to work harder.

Glug glug glug, yeah, I'm drinking blue Kool-aid. But still...

My thoughts exactly.

Ha - I told my daughter exactly this last night.

From now on, the only stat I care about with Andersen is wins. Everything else is irrelevant.

I also told her (she's a huge Freddie fan) that he's more likely to win the Hart than the Vezina (I didn't have the heart to tell her that he isn't winning either, but I still stand by my logic).

Not exactly, even with significant improvement under Keefe, Leafs are on a pace for 97 to 98 points - probably good for 1st or 2nd wildcard spot and second consecutive year of decline in points.

80's hockey is back baby!

except without all the constant hooking, 17 icings & offsides a period and guys skating around in circles for 2 minutes before every faceoff.

and intermissions being used as a smoke break.

I'm pretty sure Tampa is going to have less than 128 points this year. Oh noes!

I think you're right. They can force themselves to work. Will they? What is the catalyst to get them going? Guys like Clark or Gilmour could almost will the team under them. Who is that guy? Where is that collective will?

Under Babcock what had us all so angry was the obvious lack of effort. The obvious unwillingness to take a hit and make a play. The unwillingness to play through any type of adversity.

With Keefe as the coach the opposition hasn't stopped hitting the Leafs or being adversarial, but the Leafs have stepped up as required for the most part.

If you watch the start of both the Florida and Edmonton games recently, you can almost see - right from the get go - the Leafs didn't have it. They were slower to the puck. They weren't working as hard. I think they expected to win.

This team can certainly beat Boston, or anyone. A lot of teams can beat them, too, obviously - but the point we'd agree on is that they need to earn it, not expect it.

Yup.

This.

Yes the Leafs should come out with a victory against the Devils but so should the Caps and Lighting.

Let’s not pretend like every good team can beat NJ easily every game because that’s not true.

Be happy with the win.

a win is a win. 1 win out of the next 2 should leave us in a good spot for the stretch drive after the all-star break.
