I didn’t love his usage of Tats, but his ability as a coach is impressive. I’d take him in a heartbeat

You scratch one of the best two way wingers in the league that consistently puts up 20+ goals and it costs you the cup that makes you a bad coach.

As much as I'd love to see Detroit get Gallant … his current deal runs through next season (signed a 4-year deal in 2017). He can chill, get paid, and … DO THIS ALL OVER AGAIN when Seattle drops the puck for the first time September 2021. Go Kraken !!!

He had a team he liked, Tatar didn’t cost him the cup. Washington just flat out beat them. I like tats, but that wasn’t the difference. Look at the whole body of work. He’s an outstanding coordinator of talent.

Very possible, but some coaches just don’t like to sit. (Coach Q), and 2 other coaches took new jobs 34 days after being let go and sill being paid. These guys love to be in it.

I tend to think that Yzerman will move on but post season. The Gallant availability may shake that up though

I agree that Yzerman may not make a coaching change until the season is over. Just like you said though, Gallant being available now may change that. I actually believe that the best guy for the job is currently in rehab facing his demons with alcoholism. That's Jim Montgomery. If he sobers up, he may be a good fit for this team. It's nothing against Gallant, but Montreal may be calling him and willing to pay more.

I think what's important to consider is long term, not short term. Changing the coach this season, it isn't going to matter, they only have what they have to work with, and that's a 12-32-3 team. Howard is playing miserably. Injuries are stacked up and there's little to no hope left.

I look at it as what's better for the team in the long run. Are they going to stick with Blashill throughout? I really doubt it. Will a new coach make this team better immediately? Probably not, at all. When they finally get their act together, develop a few more guys and start winning again, do we want a Blashill at the helm, or someone like Gallant or Laviolette? And when was the last time these kinds of coaching options were available?

I'd rather do it now and lock one in, instead of these guys landing elsewhere and we have to slot in Bylsma until a better option comes along. Grab one while they are there for the taking, if they want to come here.

It really sucks for these guys to have their personal demons aired out. It’s an interesting thought, thanks for posting that

What “could” happen (just my opinion, not a rumor) is Gallant getting hired as a “consultant” to end the year. I agree teams will be lining up for this guy. Calgary? Winnipeg? It’s going to be interesting. He and Stevie know each other well (were linemates for a while) and have been friends for a long time. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gallant as Stevie’s guest at a few games.

I'd like to see him in Detroit, just not right now. The worst thing that can happen to Detroit, would be to get a coach that gets his players to play at or above their potential and squeak out a few more wins. It might make some fans happy if they are winning more consistently, but it will do nothing for their rebuild.

If you look at recent cup winners, they all had several years of top five picks. Chicago had 6 top 10 picks in 7 years, including a #1 and two #3's. Pittsburgh had a top 5 pick in five straight years including 2 #1's and 2 # 2's. Hell, in the past 10 drafts, Edmonton had 4 #1's six total top five picks and they are just now getting competitive.

Detroit only started getting top 10 picks 3 years ago and the highest is a #6. I'd say they need a solid three to four years of top five picks to turn things around, provided they draft well.

In the past 3 years, they've had a #9 and two #6's. If you look at the draft history, only a handful of #9 picks had all-star careers and by my count, even less players taken at #6 had all-star careers. They need top five picks desperately and they need them for several years.
