This hypothetical question. The fact will be that Ovi is going to be the only player ever to score more than 900 goals in NHL. And thus I guess could be called the best goal scorer ever.

I agree that today's game is soft, but scoring goals is harder than ever. And the topic is goal scoring.

Guy Lafleur scored 30-40 goals a year by skating over the blueline at the boards, and then ripping a shot to the far side of the net.

He wouldn't score a single goal that way today.

- Atomic Wedgie

Absolutely agree. That being said i miss the scoring. I loved when 20+ guys would have over 100 points. Selanne and Mogilny getting 76 in the same year. Oh, the memories lol

FALSE.
almost every team has multiple point per game scorers which was not the case pre salary cap era hockey.

Sorting it to top 20 PPG would come out to 89 pts over an 82 game season.
Last I checked 89 =/= 100

you tried

yeah probably that's how these things tend to work.
- BINGO!

The bulk of Gretzky's success comes not from physical attributes like speed and power. It's from his "talent". He had more hockey sense than anyone in the history of the game. He could see the ice better than anyone else. His ability to be where he needed to be, or to know where his line-mates would be was what set him far above the others. This same "Talent" would allow him to thrive in any generation. I have no doubt he would be top-10 in "todays" NHL.

As for physical nature of players... Johnny Gaudreau is built like a 17-year old girl - and he's a 1st-liner in "todays" NHL.

He's at 698 with season more than half over. Barring a serious injury it's possible - but you make it sound like it's a done deal.

And is that the criteria then? Most goals == best goal scorer?
So RIGHT NOW, we can all agree Gretzky IS the best goal scorer?

Mike Bossy...

But if Mario hadn't got sick & hurt his back & missed a lot of games He would be up at the top.

I know this is a big IF. But if Mario stayed healthy. not only do I think he would be in the top goal scorer of all time discussion up there with Bossy & Gretz. But Mario could have given Gretz a run for his money on all time points.

Either way what OVI continues to do is incredible. I really can’t see him slowing down anytime soon either. The guy has Jágr blood in him. 100% the best goal scorer of his generation. But Mario, Bossy and Gretz were on another level.

And the one thing everyone forgets.... yes, goalies sucked back in the day. But you were basically allowed to do whatever necessary to knock a guy off the puck back in the day. The holding and hooking game is totally different than today’s game. Also Imagine gretskys point total with out the two line pass.

The Great One vs. The Great Eight

Gretzky had 894G in 1487 Games. That is 0.601 GPG. He played from 1978-1979 to 1998-1999, where the average team scored between 2.63 and 4.01 GPG, for an average of 3.50 over his career.

Ovi has 689G in 1132 Games. That is 0.608 GPG. He has played since 2005-2006. During his career, the average team has scored between 2.71 and 3.08 GPG, for an average of 2.85 over his career.

Ovi scores more GPG than Gretzky, despite Gretzky playing in an era where almost 23% more goals were scored on average.

In short, yes. Ovi is #1.

- matty12345

Gretzky reached 689 goals in only about 900 games. He had 677 by 847 games. Comparing the whole career of one player against one who hasn't declined as much so far isn't a great comparison.

1992-93 season.

Lemieux wins the Art Ross Trophy by 12 points, despite playing only 60 games of an 84 game season.

Because he was taking franking chemo treatments!

I am a Gretzky over Lemieux guy, but damn, that's the most inspirational season an athlete has ever delivered.

correct me if i'm wrong, but in the Bossy/Gretzky era, if a team was on a powerplay, even a 2 minute one, could they not score multiple goals. I don't believe they changed the rules to allow the player to come out of the box after a goal until like the mid 80s. that would have a HUGE impact on the extra number of goals those players had.
- sensarmy_11

I could be wrong, but I think that rule was changed long before that, like maybe the 60's or 70's?

He had probably the greatest single goal scoring season statistically but it was a huge outlier even for him. I wouldn't say it makes him the NHL's greatest goal scorer overall, just a great goal scorer who had one stupefyingly ridiculous year.

Art Ross is total points, not goals. Ovechkin has led the NHL in goals 8 times, which is more than any other player in history. (Bobby Hull is next with 7).

Gretzky was obviously the better player overall and better offensively when you consider his elite ability to set up goals by his teammates, but that's not the point of this argument.

- Sven22

it was the only time he said he wanted to concentrate and focus on goal scoring. If he had played like that year in year out, he would have put up similar goal totals throughout his career.

You mean like Cam Neely?
Or Eric Lindros?

Let's see Ovi score all those goals with a wooden stick.

- Nasty_Duck

Lindros in todays game would be more dominant than he was in the 90s. He would be ridiculous in todays game

Mario ... it’s not close... a healthy Mario would have scored over 1000 goals. He was literally unstoppable when healthy.
