Bridge deal with (an expected AAV?). Anyone surprised by that?
I thought he'd be at or just under 5... Its what the market demands I suppose.

He's among the top 5-on-5 producers among Dmen in the league (10th in 5-on-5 pts since 2017-18; 25th in 5-on-5 pts/60 since 2017-18), consistently outperforms his team goal share despite playing in comparable minutes to the rest of the top-4 and- aside from Benning- his contribution to McDavid's dominance is the greatest among regular Dmen.

Not only is he worth 5.6mil, he would've been worth the 6.5 he would've gotten on a long term deal- particularly when you factor in cap growth. Getting him on this contract is to open up that extra ~1mil this offseason to help the team get through the next couple years of cap difficulties.

Too much and too risky.

Terrible deal.

Josh Morrissey is debatable a better defenseman and signed for 8 years for only 0.65 mill more.

So many contracts expiring before the new TV/Streaming deal in two years. Speculation that the cap is going to take a huge jump. Not surprising Nurse wants in on that.

Nurse also takes some risk here by betting on himself against some hungry young competition. For that reason I think the bridge isn't so bad as it gives management 2.5 years to really evaluate what they have on defense.

If over the next 2.5 years the coach comes to favor one or two of Bear, Jones, Lagesson, Bouchard, Samorukov and/or Broberg over Nurse then Nurse could be on the outside of the top 4 looking like an over-priced third pairing D man. That wouldn't help his contract extensions.

Of course this all depends on what happens with Klefbom and Larsson going forward as well. Larsson will probably not get another raise in his career.

That's the crux of it to me. It gives the team time to assess whether we can rely of Bear's breakout; if Jones can step up; if Bouchard, Samorukov and Broberg can develop and if Klefbom proves worthy of resigning at the end of his deal. Also helps them see if Nurse ascends to a higher level over the next two years.

Wow! Big numbers for a defender that so many people on here dislike.
Personally I like what Nurse brings to the team. 2 year show me contract is good for both player and team

Not really sure what the oilers management is thinking here. They pretty much guaranteed that one of their best young defensemen walks at UFA in two years. No offence to Edmonton but it's not really a sought after spot for UFAs and I would be extremely surprised if he re-signs. Not happy at all with this extension.

The deal is part prove it, part stop gap till the Oilers have real cap flexibility.

The money owed to Lucic, Russell, Larsson, Koskinen, Manning, Sekera, Pouliot and Chiasson will all be off the books when Nurse's deal expires. That's roughly 18 million in cap freed up.

If Nurse does well in the next 2 years, the money should be there to extend him again. Perhaps Nuge too. Especially since the likelihood of a big UFA splash in the meantime is slim (as you mentioned).
