Yes, and Botts is deranged in trading for him, I don't care if it was for a 7th in a distant galaxy many lightyears from now. - IonSabres
Yep, just a dumb trade. He was better off signing Pommer for the league minimum for the rest of the year. |

Saves them $1.075 of annual cap hit.
Better than nothing.
Now do something else Botts! - IonSabres
I believe it only means the amount of LTIR they are using decreases, while their actual cap space remains as it has all season, which is zero.
I also looked up the performance bonus impact.
The potential for this season is $3.97M while the potential for next year is $3.49M. I believe that means they've only been able to account for $.48M so far this season. |

The potential bonus for this season is $3.97m. The reason Botts wants to shed salary is to get $3.97m under the cap, otherwise the bonus overage would be added to next year's salary. So instead of being able to spend up to the cap limit of $81.5m, we could only spend up to app. $77.5m (not accounting for increase in the cap).
Also, sorry for flagging on accident, fat finger hit the wrong thing trying to quote your post |

So he almost, almost Has to move out 1-2 UFAs at the deadline.... which makes the Frolik Trade look even worse...
But he could still move frolik, Vesey, sheary.... if there are any actual takers. |

By waiving Bogo and if Botchitall didn't trade for Frolik, we would have $5M in cap space, right? Or am I off on that? |

I'm not sure how it all works or how close they are to handing out bonuses but cap friendly has potential performance bonuses for Dahlin at $2.85M and Olofsson at $182,500...I believe how ever much they go over the cap this season comes off of next years cap...
if anyone can clarify it would be appreciated - Michael Pachla
That is how I understand it. |

I like to point everyone to cap friendly's daily cap tracker to get a better feel for the cap. It forces people to break out of looking at everything in annual terms. Everyone on the NHL roster accumulates against the cap daily. At the end of the season, there's an actual $ amount remaining (could be 0, when you're using LTIR) that has nothing to do with a final snap shot of the roster. This is what the bonuses get paid out of. They get paid after the season. Any overage rolls into the following year.

Thanks, was wondering how that worked. Didn't think the trade deadline had anything to do with it. |

To get 3.97m of actual $ remaining at the end of the season, you have to get a lot further under the cap than that. One big thing that we don't know is how much of the potential bonuses are likely to be earned.

I think you're right. While it hasn't worked out with Frolik, I will give Botts some credit on taking a flyer with him for a 4th. Obviously Botterill thought Frolik might rebound and add some scoring/veteran experience to the Sabres this year. There is no long term commitment and there is now no chance the Sabres will chase after him in free agency which is a positive.
With Botterill supposedly being a cap genius, I am sure he will get them under the magic number before the end of the year so that they are cap compliant with no penalties moving forward. Heck, all he has to do is trade out 2 of: Sheary, Girgs, , Larsson, Frolik, Vesey, EROD or even MOJO to a contender for a draft pick and he is fine. Friedman said the other day that a guy like Larsson will be in demand at the TDL. I have to believe that the small pro-rated cap hits for any of these guys in return for a 6th or 7th will occur. Who knows, maybe Botterill already has something set up with a couple of teams on TDL day which will address his cap issues. I won't pass judgement on his cap managing performance until after the TDL.

I’d like for Larsson to come back and take the 4C spot he’s fantastic defensively. Then we got Asplund, Tage, Ruotsalinen who could easily claim bottom 6 roles. Not too mention cap space and the impending RHD for forward trade we’ve been needing to make since July 1st. - Pegullaville
I think this is a very realistic picture heading into next season. I personally would rather have Lazar over Larsson. I think they both bring the same element but Lazar is cheaper and he brings more speed along with slightly more offensive capabilities than Larsson. Plus i think Larsson will get traded at the TDL to a contender. Friedman suggested his type of play is what playoff teams look for.
Filling that 2C role is critical to Botterill in the off-season. I assume it will cost one of Risto or Montour++ - depending on who the 2C is.

Pretend he makes trades that put us 2m under the cap. That means moving out something like 7m and replacing them with 2m, since we're using about 3m of LTIR.
There's something in the ballpark of 25% of the season remaining. I don't want to calculate the actual amount. 2m x .25 = 500k of season ending cap room to pay bonuses with.

A little lotto luck wouldn’t hurt.
I always figured the Sabres would pick in the 10-15 range but this streak of poor play having them sitting in 8th is playing with my emotions.
The Sabres either need to win 8 of their next 10 and make a playoff push or lose 8 of their next 10 so we can have a shot at the big 8. (obviously they are going to do neither and finish 12th because it’s Buffalo). |

Inconsistently consistent....
Does botts help them at the deadline or just make cap room and call up some Ahl reinforcements... |

Botts probably doesn’t even know. It’s a situation where trades are complex and could take up to 14 months. We just aren’t sure if discussions we had 3 years ago will come to fruition. There just may not be a trade there but it is something we will revisit in the offseason. |
