Honestly, almost any return for Simmonds would be great. Just a few years ago, he would have easily gotten you a 1st+. Now, he's less than a shadow of what he was. The Wayne Simmonds of 3 years ago would also have pummeled the player (forget who it was) that dropped Hughes, now he just gently shoves him and asks him not to do it again.

I loved Simmonds, as did most Flyers fans, but he's done.

With Simmonds you take whatever you can get. If that's Vancouver and you have to wait until next years draft that's fine.
(As stated above by our Flyer brethren, he is pretty done).

As for K-Palms, you need a Coleman-esq return that you can't say no to.

My guess is between Vats, Palms and Simmonds it is unlikely they all get done. I'd guess we really only have 1 more trade going down and it's likely Vats on a discount because he's hurt.

I think trading those 3 would put us below the cap, so we'd need to stay above that and take back salary.

You can't screw up the first round if you have all of picks in the first round.

sounds like a Backes scenario. IF we trade Palmieri.. I mean what kind of lineup do you even make?

Boqvist-Hischier-Bratt
Zacha-Hughes-Gusev
Wood-Zajac-Merkley
McLeod-Rooney-Bastian?

Sign a UFA? They're mostly around the same age as Palmieri.. and Palmieri works well with Hischier, so why not just keep him. I feel like our kids, half the team, would benefit from having Palmieri to look to, in addition to Zajac.

Depends who we draft too? If its Byfield, perhaps this is a reason to test Jack at LW? I'd be okay with trading Palms. What benefit is he having on the kids now, we still suck, Jack looks lost out there.

I say build your core, (which we almost have) then fill the gaps. Getting rid of Palms would help fill that core big time.

couple of games tonight to watch.. AZ vs Dal, and Van vs Min.

It would be quite nice to pick 3rd, 10th, 16th. If we somehow get lucky enough to win the lotto again we'd finally have a franchise player, plus that 10th, 16th, Foote, Hischier, Hughes.. that could be a team in a few years.

The kids are 18-21 and developing. They're supposed to suck. They'll improve either way, but having an experienced NHL forward or 2 would only help with the .. holistic development I guess lol.

My question is, who's supposed to be comparatively better between Byfield/Hughes?

Hughes cant stay on his feet and gets pushed around. Byfield is the complete opposite. This is why Hughes should try to learn the wing IMO.

Skill wise I do not know who would be considered better.

Toronto looks like a team that needs to make a move. They did the coaching change but are particularly a mess on D. But they also never seem willing to trade anyone who's actually good at hockey and their cap situation is CRAZY. Ironic how when we sign Kovy we get nailed to the cross but the Maple Leafs try to circumvent the cap non-stop and nobody says boo...

They play a completely different style of game, and Byfield does certain things better while Hughes is better in certain areas. But overall pure skill-wise Hughes has him beat

According to this guy, Hughes is slightly better then Byfield. It's a longwinded video (you can skip to 2:45) but interesting in demonstrating how deep 2020 is.

"Big skilled and a really good skater at 220 plus pounds. A scorer who has no problem getting the biscuit to his teammates. Has played some wing, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him broken in there, with the eventual goal as him being your team's big centre who matches up against the top centres around the NHL. A big man with finesse and physicality, and those commodities still are precious to NHL team roster to balance the swift and shifty lighterweights populating line-ups."

vs.

"The top-line centre in the US program who gets things done with strong hands, terrific vision and quick feet. Great anticipation and the ability to hold pucks on his stick no matter where he ventures. He steers pucks through traffic; his terrific vision and edging make opponents scramble to where the play is going to open into a solid look. He can come to a dead stop, watch a crowd converge on his space, and wire a puck to the open spot of net. Has a terrific shot when he uses it too. Some think he is always attempting inside moves, refusing to get funneled to the periphery and his gambling style might be seen as too abrasive. May project to wing, but we like him as a smaller pivot at this juncture. He is such a dynamic, fast-paced player despite not being the big strong powerful centre teams look for. "

People who want Byfield somehow already forget Zacha was drafted for the same reason.
