The cap isn't a problem . Every team will find a way but the quality will sure drop.

The reference about the buyout and Emergency Fund is of course way different that is why I said I don't like comparing. The similarities are relief for an unusual circumstance.

I honestly don't mind if it comes down to letting Marky Taffoli and Tanev walk and bringing in Lind DiPietro and Rafferty but it is not the best thing for the image of hockey.

More than half the league would need to follow that also.

- VANTEL

Yup that's the point to avoid that. To reject stimulus measures just to punish GMS for pre-shut down mistakes doesn't help with recovery.

Shhhh... just ten and a half hours to go before we get though one day without talking about the Russian prophet.

lol or maybe he's an asset once signed that's tradeable. Though if he improves the Canucks top 6 D then its a win either way.

The 1st and 3rd are warranted, but i was just talking about the recapture. Which is why i mentioned the recapture specifically. I know it’s confusing when people are talking about specific things so ill start daydrinking with you and all will be well!

So you now see why its beyond one team's benefit to get this taken out and what better time then post shutdown to help teams recover.
- NuckUp

No, I believe that there is no appetite by either the league or the PA to include this. Other teams might benefit, at some point in the future, but it's really only the Canucks right now that need that help.

Every single team that spends close to the cap would be significantly changed. In addition, there’s a bunch of free agents to sign and money available for them. Win win unless you’re a bottom feeding team woth no market. But im all for moving bottom feeding teams with no markets.

Calgary would get some growth from bringing a homegrown superstar in... i suppose you don’t know the number one jersey last year?

Well exactly, either don’t do it at all or do it at an equal level. The fact they allowed other teams and not the Canucks is the joke
- neem55

They only penalized the Canucks (and Panthers) and Devils because those are the only two cases where a player retired early on a backsliding contract.

The reason NJ is only 'paying' $250k is because the benefit the team received wasn't that much, and Kovulchuk retired with 8 years remaining, so the $2m or whatever was divided by 8 years. It's a simple formula, it is absolutely done on an equal level.

No, I think he's saying they paid a serious fine, to the league, along with losing draft choices. Then, they also got hit with the cap recapture penalty, which doesn't have an actual dollar value paid to anyone, it's just an accounting number tacked on to their salary cap calculation...

Not sure where the PA comes in unless you are alluding to "pressured" official retirements. As opposed to pseudo injury non registered retirements. Though a player can un-retire and play for another team.

While agree there is no surety on what the NHL will do there is no direct detriment to other teams that don't benefit. Also, to reject a measure just because the relief to other teams is not as immediate would be counter intuitive to stimulus measures.

Again, nothing wrong for pushing for this and IF it does go through would be better PR for NHL then their post lock out GM punishment mode. Its a new world when we get out of this. Relief and recovery the new norm.

So let's get this straight:

You believe that IF: Teams got a compliance buyout that the Flames would clear cap space by buying out Lucic's $5.25m (I assume this is who you would choose), and that this would give them enough room to attract Hall to Calgary (because that's where he REALLY wants to play). And that this signing would trigger huge increases in jersey sales, ticket sales and advertising sales in Calgary, which would increase league revenues in a significant way? That Hall jerseys would outsell Tavares, Crosby, Fleurie?

Calgary is a tiny market. One where the local economy is taking a beating right now. A compliance buyout isn't changing anything in that city.

Actually both were discussed and part of the original post as possible relief and stimulus measures post shutdown recovery.

Sure perhaps he could have made team and player specifics to clarify. I believe Minny, that was listed, has two players in Parise and Suter that would fit that. Montreal and Nashville could be added with Weber as another example.

Hall ain't playing in Canada again, gauaranteed, if he goes anywhere it'll be where he has a guaranteed shot at winning the Cup. I'd say he goes to either Tampa, Washington or St. Louis, all of whom are contenders and have/can clear enough cap room for him.

Okay so you're using hyberbole to make the point things will be difficult and teams will suffer. Though, when the league starts up again, its not a situation of lets get teams in line from over spending on players like a lock out situation. It will be about how to generate revenue with an exciting product on ice. Entice people to buy in the challenge of world wide recovery.

So wherever the cap ends up going down there will likely be measures to help teams keep players they want and shed players they don't to make the product on ice better. Compliance buyouts are one tool. That's a logical deduction and not a surety of course.

I wouldn't even be surprised if the teams like the Canucks get the NHL to remove the cap recapture penalty. As those type of contracts are no longer possible there is no harm to the league but present harm to teams trying to recover. The case can be made that penalty hampers the new goals of the league in the wake of the pandemic shutdown and its economic repercussions.
