What in your opinion was the driving factor behind this steep drop off in shots?

He obviously still has a good shot, he works hard, when I watched he was winning battles but he didn't want to shoot?
Was he deferring to his linemates too much?
Trying to help Lucic get his game back?
Was the coach (either one) pushing him to be a playmaker?

Is there any tracking of assist attempts? For example, a playmaker could set his linemate up on shots in the slot that don't go in the net, don't hit the net or don't get taken? What is the shooting percentage on the passes on which shots are the next action? What percent of passes in the offensive zone lead directly to shots etc?

I can't believe we're only 5 months from Jankowski being the best player of the 2012 draft.

In 10 years, Feaster predicted, "Jankowski will be viewed as the best player in the 2012 draft," adding "We felt we could take the gamble."

"I really want to prove them right," Jankowski said of the Flames. "I think in 10 years I can be the best player in this draft. ... But I need to get bigger and stronger, and I'm going to work out very hard."

Craig Button said by the age of 26 he would be the best player of the draft and needed to grow into his body (his brother the Head of Scouting for Calgary at the time).

Janko is top end talent and should be playing top line minutes. He can replace Monahan.

It was a truly brutal draft year. Here's a fun game: don't count defensemen or goalies, and go down the list from #21 and pick a forward that you think is better than Jankowski.

I got all the way down to Jimmy Vesey at 66. I get the feeling he wouldn't have signed regardless of the team that drafted him, though.

The larger problem is that Feaster traded OUT of the 14 position to move down to 21.

So, going from 14 and beyond are:

Hertl
Wilson
Teravainen

That's where he (frank)ed up - not just in getting Janko, who was a MASSIVE overdraft at 21 (was projected by central scouts as mid 2nd rounder), but by trading out of a slot where he could have drafted one of the legitimate prospects at the time.

It was a poopty draft generally, but Feaster screwed the pooch so hard there, it's not even funny.

It's such a weird thing to keep bringing up. GMs say this all the time about players they rate higher than anyone else, and he even said it was a gamble. It didn't work out. Not a big deal. The Oilers also thought Yakupov would be the best player in the 2012 draft. The Flames did better at 21 than the Oilers did at 1.

I mean Yakupov had nearly twice as many points as an Oiler as Jankowski has as a Flame, so....

Jankowski is fine as a 3rd line guy but we're talking about a nearly 26 year old with 36 career goals here. Arguing that drafting him at 21 is better than making one of the worst 1st overall picks of all time is... why bother?

Why wouldn't it get brought up? It's a hilariously overconfident statement made by someone whose body of work didn't back up his confidence. Much like those who poke fun at all of Chiarelli's gaffes, these jeers aren't aimed at the Flames; they're aimed at a guy who made a fool of himself.

I don't think they do. They might say "We think he can be a real difference maker" or "We really think he can be a key part of our team", but rarely "We think this guy is gonna be the best player outta this draft". Maybe I've just missed the other instances of this; do you have any examples? Particularly for guys outside the top-10.

Yeah, they probably did. However, the difference is that the Oilers weren't the only team that thought that of Yakupov. He was pretty much the consensus #1. I'm quite certain that no one but the Flames thought that of Jankowski.

The Oilers weren't alone in that opinion though - central scouting had him ranked as #1. Janko was in the late mid to late 40's, so it wasn't just a gamble, it was a flat out stupid pick and everyone knew it at the time.

As noted in my last post, Feaster traded down, which compounded the stupidity of the decision. Then took Seiloff in the 2nd where he could have drafted Janko to begin with...

It's also a pretty deal when you consider the Flames have spent the better part of a few years trying to fill in their top 6 and could have done so if hadn't taken a flier on a 2nd rounder 25 picks too early.

Had to look his stats up, I've never thought of him as being very good. One 20+ season and a few around 15.. not bad for a guy that went 30 overall. Crazy how shallow that draft was. Some real good picks on defensemen, but the forwards? Not good.
