Putin obviously 1. didn't want Clinton in there, because she was planning to start a war with Russia, or at least stir things up in Europe and other parts of the world 2. wanted Trump as a President, since a weak and uncapable President of US only means more options for Russia on a global scale.

But on Trump's part he is very complimentary of Putin not just because he's beholden to him for his election but also because he has a history of praising autocrats. If Trump had the ability to murder journalists and imprison political opponents with impunity like Putin does he would be utilizing it to its utmost.

This is nice. We agree on this very much. that's at least how it was translated wrongly in US media.
the same adjective means 'colorful' (as in describing a clown) in Russian as well.
Putin thinks Trump is a clown - but at least he wasn't starting of his presidency with 'US and Russia should be enemies again'.

What's not true? That Trump would murder and imprison political and media enemies if he thought he could get away with it? I very much disagree.

I remember the "colourful" comment as well. And I agree with Putin there. You may remember so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he said it with a chuckle or at least a facial expression which further implied the clownish connotation of the word he used.
