I really can’t see Lapierre being on the board at 33

Dzingel trade IMO was Doriens best trade, if we analyze it even before Duclair's emergence.

It’s debatable if he’ll even be there at 18

A great bet too on Columbus being a lottery team based on Panarin and Bob leaving for greener pasture. If Elvis and Jonas didn’t play the way they did that could have been an early 2nd round pick.

I think getting a mid round 1st and 2nd for Pageau in a very deep draft was a stroke of genius.
I think Dzingel is less valuable than Pageau, however, I think what makes the Dzingel trade more impressive than the Pageau trade is the fact that Duclair has a coming out party.

I swear Dorion is secretly a trade God.

**************
Ran the draft lottery on tankathon and this happened; I’ll fill in the blanks based on opinion and mostly assumption.

1. Senators
So, Lafrenière or Stutzle?
Call me crazy but I go Stutzle

2. Sabres
Lafrenière in Buffalo? Tasty hot takes.

3. Ducks
Byfield at 3? (frank) the Ducks are lucky.

4. Red Wings
Drysdale cause that’s what Yzerman does.

5. Senators
Raymond, Holtz, Rossi and Perfetti all are options. Who do you take here?

6. LA
Probably Holtz or Raymond but again who knows.

7. Devils
They might snatch up a defensemen but I’d lean more towards one of the high octane offensive players here. Perfetti or Rossi could be here.

8. Montreal
Well they didn’t get Laf so I’m a happy camper. Still will get a solid offensive player here.

9. Blackhawks
Your guess is as good as mine, probably better

10. Devils
Devils again and this time they might bite on the defensive side of things. Speculation speaking here.

11. Wild
I think this is where Askarov drops to.
I just can’t see the Wild saying no to 12 years of competent, if not elite, goaltending. Russians are really bringing out some grade A goaltending (Shesterkin, Askarov, Vasilevsky and Sorokin).
Dubnyk isn’t getting younger and Guerin seems smart enough to know what’s up.

I’d keep going but it honestly doesn’t matter. Melnyk came out again talking about trading up and or for immediate NHL help. Can’t disregsrd the fact that Covid (frank)ed up a lot of teams drooling at a higher cap next year.
Teams like Tampa (yes Spatso this ones for you), Toronto, Vancouver, San Jose and Arizona might need to shed salary and that usually means a pretty piece or draft pick coming back.

Any thoughts on potential trade up options? I like the Devils as they have 3 picks in the top 20.

Any thoughts on trading for bad cap space with a team in dire need?
I like the Canucks and taking Eriksson off their hands could lead to high draft compensation or a nice young prospect.

Normally I would agree. And, you probably are right. But, this is going to be a very unusual draft. The draft is strong, well into the second round. 4 Teams, Ottawa, New Jersey, Anaheim and Minnesota own 1/3 of all the first round picks (10 of 31).

So, I look at Ottawa at 18 (Islanders pick) and I am so tempted to call Lapierre. But everyone knows he has been in the concussion protocol. There is so much talent still on the board. So, I take the risk. I hope teams will be cautious and take one of the many first round sure bets and shy away from Lapierre. Ottawa has 4 picks in the second round and Lapierre could be a steal at 33 (but, on the other hand he might never play in the NHL).

Getting 3 centers would be pretty amazing; Stutzle can be moved to LW and White + Pinto to RW:

2 years down to road

Brady Tkachuk - Quinton Byfield - Colin White
Tim Stutzle - Logan Brown - Drake Batherson
Anthony Duclair - Josh Norris - Shane Pinto
Alex Formenton - Connor Zary - Connor Brown

*also hate to say but it would be shocking to see Lapierre going to 33, although I'm not going to say it's not possible at all. None of us know his health. But again, a lot of people here have said it, he's likely going from 12-25

I swear Dorian is a trade god!

Let’s face it, Dorian has done exceptionally well working under an owner who is to put it mildly, difficult! The decision to do a complete rebuild in hindsight was the right one. The stars of the team wanted out and the locker room was broken. All the other NHL teams felt Dorian would be easy to fleece with his orders to dump the teams best players. He lost some trades like with Hoffman but cleaned up on most of the big ones. The Karlson trade was outstanding, Doug Wilson must be still kicking his ass all over San Jose for this big blunder.

Pierre is still relatively young and has gained so much experience, the Sens future is looking good thanks to him.

I'm just waiting for Granpa to enter the thread and tell us that both trades were horrible and Dorion isn't capable of managing a peewee team.

You view him as the voice of reason on here? He's the most cynical person I've ever come across. He's not grounded. He's 100% doom and gloom. Our dose of reality from him is that everybody and everything sucks? Guess I'll just slit my wrists and end it now. 🙄

Every fan base needs Granpas in them otherwise you end up like the Leafs fan base. And no I’m not a Leafs fan, recently gave up on Toronto and embraced the red.
If you don’t think Granpa is worth being a valued opinion then go to the Leafs boards. Those guys are straight jacket lifers.

It is good to be grounded and it is also good to dream, but with age we both know that balance is what matters most.

Dorion is one of the best GMs in the league. He's at the elite level when it comes to evaluate players & drafting them. When he trades players from a position of strength he always comes up on top. He has a vision for the team & he put a plan in place. He's the best we ever had.

Agreed.

There should be no problems with people having differing opinions and no need for personal attacks either.

Agreed as well.

It's not so bad here, but theres other forums out there where any criticism ( e.g. Ottawas prospect depth vs Elite prospects, Brown's potential) will get you vilified.

optimus-reim, choosing stutzle over lafreinere

I might be the only one who agrees with you.

Stutzle gets comparisons to Patrick Kane; what do I like about him the most?

He talks about winning championships; if he has to play in the AHL to start, he doesn't care. IMO, he will never see the AHL in his life

Highest probability is Sens get 2 and 3. Byfield and Stutzle

Next highest probability is 1 and 3. Lafreniere and Stutzle

They can go 2 and 4. Byfield and Rossi

Least Probable is they go 3 and 4 Stutzle and Rossi.

Note Rossi is my favourite at 4 and I understand that there are others that might disagree. Basically #1 is a lock for Lafreniere. Some debate 2 and 3 between Stutzle and Byfield. But Dorion will not be able to resist Byfield's huge size.

#4 is where there is a huge divergence of opinion and room for sincere debate. But the scouts are adamant that Lafreniere is the top pick and Dorion first and foremost is a scout and a shrewd evaluator of talent.

This is why I think Rossi sneaks up to #4 on the Ottawa list. He is 5'8" but weighs in at 193 lbs. He is a tank, very hard to move off the puck and he plays a physical game (some say dirty). Dorion loves the physical game.

Height for wingers is not much an issue anymore, look at all the 30+ goal scoring wingers at or under 5'10".

BRENDAN GALLAGHER 5'9"
ALEX DeBRINCAT 5"7"
Brad Marchand 5'9"
Johnny Gaudreau 5'9"

and many more
