Just to play devil's advocate here as I'm sure he said that with some intention to troll, here's 12 players for whom you COULD make a case for being better than Matthews: McDavid, Mackinnon, Crosby, Draisaitl, Kucherov, Panarin, Pastrnak, Marchand, Kane, Hedman, Carlson, Josi. I don't necessarily think that's the case as I think he's clearly a top-10 player, but I don't think the statement is nearly as absurd as you're trying to make it seem.

EDIT: A good number of those would be a stretch, though.

Mitch Marner is the best player on the Leafs as unlike Matthews and Tavares he shows up ever game and plays hard every shift. He still isn't worth $11 mil a years in any other place except Toronto.

Fair. I'd likely take Hedman over any of those last 5 (maybe even over Drai and Panarin), but comparing between positions isn't a simple matter.
