Starting a new thread because I'm not sifting through and backreading the main blog ones
Does anyone really want to win the 2020 Stanley Cup? Whoever does (and Canuck-luck says this is the only time they ever will), its going to carry an asterisk with it and likely none of the celebration/parade that goes along with it. Just thinking of the winner hoisting it in an empty stadium is depressing
It isn't like the Cup hasn't gone a year without being awarded, just cancel the rest of the year and start your hub city season in Sept/Oct
Also hope y'all are keeping well |

There isn't going to be a playoff thingy and they'll be lucky to have a full '20-'21 season with fans in the arenas.
I was wondering where you were cowering. |

I'm fine with a shorter or a modified season next year when all teams play under the same rules. Just seems dumb to me to force a post-season into when your season would normally start. A 6ish month break mid season is not, in my view, a legitimate way to continue a season fairly (and I say that knowing the Canucks paid big assets for a couple weeks of a rental play, and they have a goalie that could steal this "tournament")
Hockeybuzz has been like joining double-dutch. Been watching for a spot to jump in but discussions of interest have been almost non-existent |

If they cancel the season I understand why, and I’m fine with it, but I understand why they want to finish it too. If they play I’ll watch and if they win I’ll be pumped. I could give a fck about an asterisk. - CubanBuffet
I get why they are trying ($$$) but my sense is that we will get the same total number of games this next calendar year regardless of where they draw the line for the 19/20 season ending and 20/21 starting so personally I'd rather them spent the time focusing on making the 20/21 season as "normal" as possible
Maybe my feelings about winning will change once the games get started, but for now these playoffs give me 2016 World Cup feelings |

Yes I want a Champion to be crowned, sort of speaking, but not at the cost of public health. |

Agreed. The NHL looks like a farce in all of this. Focus on next season and not this tournament thingy. |

So you still are lurking, great to see.
I personally think there is so much more driving the reopening of the 19-20 playoffs that we are not privy to. Why go to all the effort and expense, and there must be considerable expense to propping up a modified playoffs.
People say it's greed, for who? No gate revenues, limited merchandise sales, so why all the extra expense for Aquillini to bring in players, travel for a play in whatever, meals, accommodation, flights.
What is the driving force? My guess is that if they shut down completely there would be massive contractual issues and a loss of money that far out weighs the cost of propping up a 2 month sideshow.
BTW, I will PVR any games and watch them at 9:30 - 10:00 just like I would in a non-pandemic season, and I will cheer for the Canucks even with an asterisks beside their Stanley Cup win. |

Interesting perspective and I say that without being a facetious d!ck-wad.
I think pro sports is done until next year. It won't be without massive fallout, look at the many other industries that are going to be unintentionally shut down. Entertainment, travel, hospitality, event planners and party rentals, port-a-potties, catering........ |

You can be a facetious d!ckwad, I’ll still you all the same.
So genuine question MrRichard, why all this effort for little monetary gain.
And City of Victoria is doing massive road maintenance everywhere with the old blue John on long term sites... |

It is an intriguing question and my guess is that they are somehow, going to lose a lot of money and/or several teams without staying relevant and competing. There seems to be more at cost then we know or they are admitting publicly. How's that you Benning fanboy?
How do they go forward without the AHL to call up players?

This.
Also, any players that are privy to any sort of discussions with the league, have more than likely been asked to stay positive whenever talking to media, knowing damb well it isn't going to happen. |

The break has been nice
I agree there is probably some unknown details behind the scenes, but I think the bottom line still is money (not profit but mitigating losses). It wouldn't surprise me if we find out later that there is a new TV/broadcast deal or that the host cities gave the league a real sweetheart deal.
The playoffs are easier to monetize than regular season, which is why I think they are trying to complete a season rather than start a new one. As a whole I don't think they can pull this off anyway, but given the health risks I don't think they are trying to play just for the love of the game |
