Elliotte Friedman, on Sportsnet, says he spoke with Sabres’ new director of scouting Jeremiah Crowe today:

“I think you’re going to see the Sabres, based on my conversation with him, do some different things.” (1/2)

Elliotte cont’d (2/2) “I think they’re gonna do video scouting, analytics, and on the ground scouting, and they want to do a mix of all three. It’s pretty clear that the Sabres are going to try some new and different things, though he did say some external hires are coming.”

Ya think they would have used a hybrid scouting format by now.

Honest question, Chayka is an analytics-driven GM, but he whiffed on Stephan. What do you think happened?

And, you forgot Nylander at 8

*shivers*

- Michael Pachla

Didn't forget, not with the organization anymore. Also that wound up being their best result after the trade which is....not great.

Most of Chayka's moves have gone against what you'd call traditional analytics. Purely speculation on my part, but I suspect ownership played a role.

Speaking of the bold, I have a good buddy from Pittsburgh whose response to the lottery results was, "Yeah I'm hoping the Pens lose to the Canadiens, coronavirus cancels the tournament in the real first round, we get the top pick, win/win."

I am wondering what happens if the qualifying round doesn't even happen. Do they just revert to points percentage to determine the teams teams eligible for the second lottery? I hope they thought that far ahead.

- JetpackJesus

I'm pretty sure they did. Tappen mentioned a jump from "12 to 1" which makes no sense unless they already have them mapped out based on current percentage, so, whoever 12th is would win it. That's one way of doing it.

Oh well. If it happens it happens. People are now complaining about things that havent even happened. Wasted energy.

Edit: At this rate, it doesnt look like the season is going to finish.

- Mentalorgasm5

My complaint is that the odds are out of whack. You have a higher chance of moving down than staying the same. That's incredibly stupid.

The Sabres could still have a shot if all goes bad with COVID 19

If the 2019-20 Return to Play does not occur for any reason, the teams with the 8th to 15th lowest points percentage at the pause would equal shots (12.5 per cent) at getting the No. 1 overall pick. Keep in mind, though, not all those teams may not own their first-round pick.

Watched the lotto on DVR. Sweet. Just a friendly neighborhood reminder of how big of a total loser of a putz Botterill is. Set the organization back at least a decade. Thanks Botts.

All in for Quinn. Gonna take some good Karma for him to still be there. Goooooooosfraaaaaaaaaaba

- Hatboro_Swords

Quinn’s been a late riser, but prob will still be there at 8. If he’s picked before 8, a really really good player will habe fallen to 8

Honestly, i thought he was up there with Dubas in his reliance upon advanced stats.

Not a bad pick if you believe the late-bloomer hype. Probably as good as anyone else there.
- Michael Pachla

Agreed, might as well take a shot on a 50 goal scorer. What do I know. I’m just a moron who thinks goals and points win games. I should be way more impressed with Holtz and the 9 goals he scored.

Well since I’m a bitter Ducks fan about dropping ...

Let me offer a ray of hope...

Zegras @ 9 last year for us... will make a lot of teams look silly...

You do realize what league Holtz played in and what 9 goals as a 17 year old translates to in that league?

a good chunk of his moves were. Taking on Datsyuk's cap hit to move up and take Chychrun

moving Stone, adding Hjalmarsson, fleecing the Flyers for picks in 2017, adding Kuemper.

But yeah, it's mixed in with a bunch of moves that are suspect at best. Thats why I thought maybe pressure from ownership played a factor, with say Stepan and even the Hall trade.
