Tyler Cameron: Marian Hossa.
Marian Hossa is the start, the middle, and the end of my blog title.

No, it is not a complete sentence, but it's a statement and a nod of recognition to one of the best – if not the best – all-around players I've ever seen play the game of hockey.

Joel Quenneville used to call him the perfect hockey player and it's overall skill set, along with his impressive career numbers (1134 points in 1309 games) that have gotten him into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Hossa wasn't always this way though and that's what's so impressive.

We got to watch it happen in real time. An incredible and-also very underrated player who seemed like a genuine 'good guy' (and I'm happy to hear it's true)

I tell you what a game, and Big Hoss serving 5 minute major being bailed out by i believe Kanes shorty. Game of bounces and we got 2 huge bounces at the end of the game and in OT

Hossa's goal against Nashville - like the 2 in 17 seconds against Boston, like so many other important goals in the last 10 years - everyone on the ice played the right part and GOT to the right PLACE:

Bolland, freeing the puck off the boards back to Sopel....

Sopel taking the puck around the net and dropping it off for Hjalmarsson - THEN GOING TO THE RIGHT POINT, HIS PLACE ON THE ICE....

Bolland below the goal line, in position to get the pass from Hjalmarsson....then passing back to Sopel....

Hossa getting out of the box and GOING TO THE NET, in position for the rebound.

Watching a lot (probably too much) of the past games during this time at home, it's really fun to see Hawks in places to get the puck from the defensemen on clearings, beginning the transition to offense.

That's what's missing from this team the past two seasons, especially under Colliton - players being in the right position in any of the three zones. Don't know if it's Colliton's fault, the fault of the coaching staff in general, or if it's mostly on the players.

Best two way player I have ever seen, he earned every penny of his salary. Tyler, you better not miss anymore time, or you’ll become the Wally Pipp of HB.

Erat's backhand pass, facing the boards, onto Kane's stick is what ended that series.

then it was offsides during PK's goal in game 6 that ended it.

people way underestimate luck in this sport

(1) Luck tends to even out over time. How many games did the Preds win because of luck (even with no Cups)? And Erat's errant pass wasn't bad luck - it was a bad play - no reason to make that blind play to the center of the ice with so little time left on the clock.

(2) The better, more disciplined teams SEEM to get the breaks because they are in good position to take advantage of them.

Welcome back Tyler ... now get back to work.

Remember that Hossa was injured at the start of the 2009/10 season and missed a bunch of games, but if I recall correctly we got a snapshot of what Hossa would mean to the Hawks in the first game (against San Jose I think) when he scored a couple goals. It was as much or more than I hoped for that first game, and every game after that. An argument could be made the Hawks don't win any Cups without Toews, Kane and Keith - I think Hossa should be included in that group.

That year with Erat's pass: A BUNCH of luck but also they made a lot of their own too. The "PK was off-sides" team was really good

Omigosh, it seems clear you can’t let go that your team blew it’s Cup window, so let it go...and, maybe,
You could figure out another cheer that is a better representation of a team sport than “Crawford, Crawford , you suck!” And chanting it when the score is tied, means YOUR GOALIE sucks equally.
Last line of defense team game as you said bunches of luck, but to think you are upsetting a pro goalie with a u suck lacks originality, thought or cleverness, like crying over spilled milk....

yeah, I'll pass on that bait. I didn't mean anything more than "that was a really good team".

Having a "favorite team" becomes less and less of a thing the older I get so ... whatever man.

I used to HATE the chant too - but now (along with everyone else here) we LOVE it because of how much it bothers everyone else (thanks for the confirmation!)

Tyler, great tribute to Hossa!

One thing that stands out with your blog is how you pointed out that Hossa didn't become the all-around gem until the latter half of his career.

I also totally forgot it was Hossa's stick that clipped Berard under the visor to severely injure his eye. I had a teammate in rec league hockey who had the same mishap but luckily his vision is fine now.

And thank you again for the opportunities to sub in a few blogs last week. I am grateful.

Changing directions a bit. What are your thoughts on Josi's contract? The Hawks have a few doozies themselves, but I would think his contract is about 3 years too long. I know he is the captain there, but that still seems like a ton of money for a player that will be 39 at the end of it.

In the 1997 draft where the Sens took Hossa at 12th, the Hawks nabbed Daniel Cleary at 13th and also had another 1st rounder taking Ty Jones at 16th.

Cleary had a pretty decent career, mainly with the Wings, after he redefined himself as a pretty good middle 6 checking winger rather than a top 6 scorer.

Not sure happened to Jones. He played a handful of NHL games.

Mikael Holmqvist (18th) played only 3 seasons, one with the Ducks who drafted him then two more in Chicago.

Of the 1st rounders after Hossa, Brendan Morrow (25th) had the most productive career.

Scott Hannan (23rd) played the most games with 1,000+.

I can't say much more than has already been stated on Hossa. I always wonder how/why there aren't more players like him in the league. Maybe not as prolific overall, but at least with the same mentality to be a stalwart on both ends of the ice.

I think that is why the Hawks Cup teams were so good. In addition to Toews, and Hossa, you had Bolland, Buff, Ladd, Brouwer, Bickell, Sharp (to a degree), Handzus, Richards, Saad, Vermette, etc... Virtually the entire team was made of guys that played two ways. The current team seems to more "Group A" and "Group B" guys where they are more offense or defense. This is why I am so bullish on Dach and Kubalik. It is also why I am so happy that Boqvist has devoted so much more emphasis to the D-side.

I think: "but then he would have gone somewhere else and how do you fill that hole?" .. ... and live with it. I'm not as enamoured with him as most people seem to be but I don't think it's a terrible contract either (he can skate and that does age well ... i hope).

BUT I would have made Ellis the 'C' and let Roman be part of the 'A' rotation.

Also: I would have traded him for Johansen

Mark Stone seems like he has a chance at sharing that description ... but I haven't seen him play as much as I'd like either.

This was my favorite quote in the HOF aftermath. By Versteeg, via John Dietz in the Daily Herald. Hossa was injured and had a late start to the 09-10 season.

"He didn't play until November and -- I swear -- it was like watching a Ferrari skate down the ice," Versteeg said. "I still remember me and (Patrick) Kane looked at each other and we're like, 'That's a professional hockey player right there. Look at him.'"

Looks like it. From what I can tell, there seem to be sets of players with prospects and reserve players in one set and starters in another with some mixing depending on how many players are present that day.

Is that the same player you tried to fraudulently not include in the team salary cap because of a boo boo on his skin? What was it? Crotch rot???

No class man!!!

Totally zero class!!!
