I cant' explain how the team was so bad this year. It was just brutal. Now we only have interim GM, an interim head coach and a rumor that Lindy Ruff is on the way.
While Devils fans have differing opinions about the team needing to spend more in free agency or not, most would agree we are not a well run organization. Ironic considering what a mainstay good management was under Lou Lamoriello until things went nuclear with the loss of Parise, Clarkson, and Kovy.
It's been a struggle and it doesn't seem to be getting better.
One bone of contention with article. I wouldn't call Hall's MVP season a return to form because it was definitely the best year he ever had. |

I think that’s a fair contention! Perhaps more of a follow through on high expectations. You did well to point that out. Thank you!
Lou is, to me, an outstanding manager. His work ethic is incredible. There are GMs and coaches who don’t seem to be able to adapt to the game, but in my opinion he has.
There is still a lot of talent, someone has to be able to course correct. Thanks so much for reading and chiming in on this. |

Subban was awful.
I watched a ton of games and it looked like the main issue was getting stuck in their own end. The defense were not doing a good job of moving the puck up to the wingers on zone exits.
Lots and lots of off the glass and change. Makes it impossible to get into the opposition's end and kills possession. Trading Coleman and Hall hurt the team but the returns were quite good.
The younger players drafted recently should have a bigger impact next season like Smith and Hughes. I dont think the team will be this bad moving forward now. |

That’s a good insight, thanks! as with most offensively skilled defensemen, pairing and usage are going to make or break the player. I agree, the team is due for some forward momentum. Thanks so much for reading and commenting! |

Jeremy Laura: I don’t understand - Devils edition - Jeremy Laura
NJ seems to have a stud goalie in Blackwood. Hopefully Stevie can draft one. Holland failed miserably at this. I'm sure the Osgood slappies will disagree. Jimmy Howard? Thomas McCollum anyone?🤮 He was a first round pick! 😲
Peter Mrazek looked promising but he was run out of town. Stefan Liv? Who? Exactly. Subban isn't what he used to be. Hischier and Hughes are 2 guys you can build around. I don't hear much about Will Butcher anymore. What happened to him? |

Butcher suffered from that College Free Agent hype. Came in good, but so many of those players get tons of press and fall off later. I doubt that Vesey is still glad he shafted Nashville. |

I just want to know what it was like to end up in Buffalo after going out of his way to shaft Buffalo? Kid isn't a bad hockey player but the whole situation was crazy. I don't think NY was bad for him but he probably would have done better in Nashville. |

Suban has 2 yrs left at $9M....
Yes he would need a sweetener to move him.....
But if they offered to trade Suban and thier 1st to Detroit for Fabri and a mid 2nd, I would take it! Play suban on the 2nd pairing and PP, work Sieder in on the 3rd pairing.
Pick Sanderson with that pick, WHOO HOO, our D has a good future!!! |

That was some serious irony. Players love going to New York, but the turn around has been quicker lately. Shattenkirk took a bruised eye for his discount |

What I like is Subban seems to get stronger each year. In the right situation he would be a fantastic get. I’d love to see him with a Brad Stuart type partner. I love the person too. He wants to make communities better. Detroit needs players like that too. Larkin is involved and so are a lot of the guys. The city needs some superstar love |

I wouldn’t give up that much considering they got him for a couple of 2nd round picks with some toss in players. A year older and maybe a few 3rds plus a roster player could make it happen.
I think he’s just what we would need to get some offense from that end of the ice but 9 M is steep. For the same price we get Frans and Abby |

I’m passing this along for someone. They pointed this out: Will Butcher put up a lot of PP points during his rookie year. Since then, the Devils have added more talent and Butcher is no longer used heavily on the PP. His even-strength production this year was his best ever.

While the devils rightfully went for it, and everyone including me had them at least in contention for a wild card spot I have to look back on their roster last summer to question were we overrating their team on paper.
Subban was definitely on the decline before he got there, hall while he had an mvp season is more of a Phil kessel type (first liner but not a player you’re going to build around if you want to succeed), Hischier while a talented two way player has yet to hit an offensive breakout, Regardless of being a #1 pick Hughes was still a rookie and Gusev had yet to play a single NHL game. The lone bright spot in this season was Blackwood who I thought negated any expectations surrounding Schneider.
All in all the devils were a team with a really high ceiling had everything gone right, but what we saw this year was the floor for everything going wrong.
As far as the wings go in big free agent moves, they probably have a better chance than others at bringing hometown boys Krug and TJ Brodie in but given the timeline that both players will likely hit their decline and the wings will be good enough to compete again I wouldn’t say it’s a match, as well both players don’t have any real good reason to leave their current teams |

The Bruins do an amazing job of getting players to take less to stay and compete. It would be shocking to see Krug move on, unless his ask is just crazy. Brodie would be welcome, but you’re right. Is there a compelling reason for him to come to Detroit? I’m not sure at this point

You’re right about the Bruins.
I think as far as free agents and rebuilding teams go there’s a calculation.
It starts with how many years do you plan on it being before you’re contending again and what side of 30 will the free agent be by the time that comes. If the answer is the wrong one you’re probably just sabotaging you’re lottery position currently and not doing anything for the future success of the team
