Could have been more is all, I think.
- BINGO!

More than 3 cups in 6 years?
Id take that over anything the leafs have now.

the only problem is term.

The dude is 30. How many more years of being any good does he have?

Be careful you don't paint yourself deeper in the corner.

- BINGO!

I would probably be comfortable with 5 maybe 6 years.

Good defensemen are usually pretty good in their early 30’s. He’s not a huge point getter either so I don’t think the leafs will be counting on him for that.

What would a team trade for Marner?

He is only owed 900K this year now...and then 10,8,8,8.

Trading for a star knowing you only have to pay him 900K in a potentially short season has to be worth something.

- Santo_44

We can't trade Marner, My wife bought me a Jersey with his name.

Gonna have to be Nylander.

But honestly - The teams that both covet Marner and can absorb his cap hit are probably few and far between. Would need significant assets in return to trade him, so it's probably best to just keep him and let him rack up 100 points a season for the next few years.

I don't think we can wait for a #1D to be drafted and developed.

Pieterangelo may be available as a UFA. Yeah, I know, cap hell, etc.

But he's from King City, and maybe he wants to sign a short-term deal due to frozen cap and possibility there may not be a season next year, or at least a very reduced one.

The UFA route makes it very interesting, because then you can trade Nylander for assets.

So it's not Pieterangelo for Nylander - it's Pieterangelo + assets for Nylander - that's a huge win.

1000% Wedgie.

And totally agree with the rest of your post.

I like Nylander, wish we could keep him and have a better D line up but I don't think it's possible to development a newly drafted D, it would take way too long...especially when our picks should always stay in the 20-32 range.

Nylander is the best piece to trade for the level of D man we would need in return....BUT....your idea is a nice fix in between.

Balance in our line up is the one thing missing. We have a lot of forward fire power and offensive-minded Dmen...a little more weight on the back end will go a long way to winning the Cup.

Nylander is the only way to get that as soon as we need it...whether in trade or futures and cap relief.

I wouldn't mind watching...

Hyman, Matthews, Marner
Johnsson, Tavares, Kapanen
Engvall, Kerfoot, Micheyev
Clifford, Goat, Spezza

Reilly, Pietrangelo (would prefer Parayko or Manson)
Muzzin, Risto
Dermott, Holl
Sandin, Lilyjegren

Andersen
Campbell

Way more balanced.

Don't forget Robertson.

I'm assuming he will make the "extended roster" in 2020-21 (I can't possibly see how they have an AHL season).

Oh ya, forgot about him. He could be Tavares' new Marner!

Trying to do the line up, I realize we have too many RWs making it even more obvious we need to move some pieces around.

Some guys would like to move Johnsson BUT we don't have a lot on LW...and Johnsson hits and grinds a bit more. (I'm not even a Johnsson fan, puck dies with him too much)

Then they would say Kapanen BUT, he hits and grinds, more importantly kicks ass on the PK.

Nylander is another finesse player with huge talent and a $7m Cap hit we could use.

If Nick is ready, and I think better than Johnsson, our line up is even better...

Hyman, Matthews, Marner
Robertson, Tavares, Kapanen

Looks like a nice top 2 especially with

Rielly, Pietranglo
Muzzin, Risto (or someone other than Holl, he's not good enough for top 4 IMO)

Nylander makes about $7 million, would much rather move Kerfoot and Johnsson similar hit and hang on to Willy. He's much more of a game changer than the other two combined IMO.

I have no idea how or why...just a recent name that was being thrown around.

We have two RDs leaving, figured we would need 2 coming back in. Guess we could do:

Reilly, Pietro
Muzzin, Vatanen (better?)
Dermott, Holl

Edit:

Okay, how about.....

Trade Nylander, Johnsson and Kerfoot....that seems to be the two sides of this discussion...then....

Hyman, Matthews, Marner
Robertson, Tavares, Kapanen
Engvall, Spezza, Micheyev
Clifford, Goat, Aberg (? whoever)

Reilly, Pietra
Muzzin, Vatanen
Dermott, Gudas

Andersen
Campbell

Forwards. CHECK.
Defense. CHECK.
Goaltending. CHECK.

Balance. FU3K YA. CHECK.

(I honestly don't know sh1t, I just like making line ups )

Not much of a risk if we front load the contract.

If he sucks in 4 years we can ship him out to a cash strapped team.

The bigger risk is not trying to get a top pairing defenseman and to keep playing 3/4 defenseman 25 minutes a night.

The D is fixed anyways, and that’s the important thing.

You have to trade good players to get good players back. Unfortunately Sakic sold Dubas a lemon, but I doubt Kyle will make that mistake again.

I got a similar one a few days back. Saying my EI payment of $1.2M was successfully transferred into my bank account.

I got one saying my car will be repossessed if I don’t call them back and it was a number similar to mine, but somewhere in the Midwest.

I had a good laugh, because well, I’ve never had a driver’s license

So if it took moving Nylander or Marner to bring in a solid #1 defencemen you don't do it? Why the reluctance to fix the offence/defence ratio? I just don't get the ignorance with regards to a team need. Ignore it at your peril
