First move: Rearrange your lines. Move Reinhart to 2C and leave him there. Move Skinner back with Eichel and leave him there. Move Johansson(playmaker) to 2LW with Reinhart (tell him to be the finisher and practice the hell of them to build chemistry) In case Reinhart fails, put Olofsson as the RW (finisher). Middlestat at 3C with Okposo and Kahun. Fill in the 4th line with Asplund(LW), Lazar(C/RW). If Cozens is ready, move Okposo to 4th line, play Cozens at 3RW. If not, Tage Thompson at 4 (RW/C). More Ullmark, less Hutton.

Second move: trade Ristolainen for a top 6 forward, ideally RW(for Eichel line) or C(move Reinhart back to 1st RW), or be bold and convert Risto to a RW. If it doesn't work, trade him during the season for a top 6 forward. (Works in NHL 2020, if you make him a power forward. :D Plus, in season trades are exciting and gives fans some hope that you're doing something.)

Third move: sign TJ Brodie or Brendan Dillon.

I don't even need 3 moves. I can do this in 2.

1) Trade Ristolainen to LA for King Alex Lafreniere. See if you can also get Alex Iafallo in that deal. King Alex + Prince Alex.

2) To fill the void from Ristolainen, try to sign Krug as a UFA. Since Krug is highly likely to just sign in Boston, well then just back up the brinks truck for Cody Ceci.

Done. Unstoppable.

1-get a time machine
2-make sure the flux capacitor works
3-go back in time and don't re sign Skinner, don't sign Okposo, don't trade ROR, re sign Lehner, re do some previous first round draft picks.

- Ross77

this is the only plan that would actually work

1. invent time machine

This team is in need of new blood. I'm not resigning any UFA on the squad. Goodbye Simmonds,Vesay,Girgenson,Larsson.

First Gm to call is Calgary of course. If they indeed are looking at Taylor Hall they need to move some money. They Say Johnny Hockey i'snt going anywhere but they need to fill a 10 million dollar spot with 16 mil in cap room. I have 2 offers.
Sam Reinhart (24) to Calgary for Gaudreu(26) and Milan Lucic 3yrs X 5.25. They can decide what Sam is worth get a little younger, and move Lucic's salary to the new home of Jack Eichel's personal bodyguard. If they werent interested in that i would throw Mittlestadt and Pick 8. I dont think this gets it done but can't hurt as a starting point.

Second call is the Coyotes if they have anyone to call at this point. They are need desperate need of moving salary. Sabres to the rescue. Offer Montour and any of the UFA above for Derek Stepan 6.5 mil 1yr and a goalie. Either is fine. Raanta 1 yr 4.25 of Kuemper 2yrs at 4.5.

Third is UFA move. Whoever the Panthers release maybe the the best free agent on the market (Kyle Okposo) here we come. Mike Hoffman (30) or Evgeni Dadanov (31) opening offer 22 million over 4 years 5.5 average. This takes them into retirement age. he lower the years the higher the salary.

These 3 moves bring in a needed scorer to play with Jack. 2nd Line center even if its just a yr on Stepan to ready Cozens. A goalie that can start/split with Ullmark or backup.

projected cap space next year....
Canucks - $17,075,128
Calgary - $16,910,834

- Brooks_Light

How much do you think markstrom is getting next year?

How much do you think petterson and hughes will be getting in 2 seasons??

Yup...vancouver will be entering salary cap hell in a year’s time. All the big money will be spent (didn’t even mention boeser with only 1 year remaining of RFA status when his bridge deal ends...BIG MONEY NEEDED THERE TOO)...

But at least they’ll have ferland and roussell and beagle and myers all locked up!!!

Too bad they suck though.

As a Die hard Sabres fan for the majority of my existence on this lonely space rock this is my painful suggestion on how to fix the team.

1. Buy lots of Gasoline. Locally if the Pegula's want to support local business. And then dump it all over the organization (metaphorically obviously)

2. Set it all ablaze. There is no saving this team.

3. Find a new team to cheer for....Seattle Kraken anyone?

Disclaimer: this was meant as a joke. In reality this team will never be able to be saved as long as the hockey gods hate us

Ross77 had the best one ! Loved this :

"1-get a time machine
2-make sure the flux capacitor works
3-go back in time and don't re sign Skinner, don't sign Okposo, don't trade ROR, re sign Lehner, re do some previous first round draft picks"

That's pretty much perfect.

1) Sign Khudobin, Greiss or Markstrom, then trade Hutton to any team for a 7th or stick him in the minors.

2) Trade Pekar + 8OA to ANA for Rakell or TB for Cirelli (might be nos from TB and ANA but this is my fantasy so bugger off)

3) Collin Miller + 2nd (maybe a later pick as well or lesser prospect) for Robby Fabbri

Skinner - Eichel - Reinhart
Olo - Rakell - Cozens
MoJo - Fabbri - Tage
LOG LINE (I'll give them another season)

Dahlin - Jokiharju
Montour - Risto
McCabe - Borgen/Pilut (if we can convince to return)

Khudobin
Ullmark

Still probably not a playoff team, but I think we could be competitive with this. Having Samuelsson, Johnson, Laaksonen and Bryson in the system, I would hope one or two can improve that bottom pairing within a year.

1) Sign Markstrom (or Lehner) to mind the net.

2) Sign Pietrangelo to anchor the D Corps.

3) Hire Gerard Gallant (but keep him, unlike the foolish Panthers and Knights).

Would love it, but we'd be miles over the cap.

If you can't get Pietrangelo then try for Krug. If you can't get Krug, well then multiple sources have suggested Cody Ceci is this summer's consolation prize.

How do you figure you'd be way over the cap? The Sabe's have a ton of money coming off the books this summer...your projected cap space for next year (per CapFriendly) is: $34,483,333

All I'm saying is...just don't let Kim P hand it ALL to Dominik Kahun...

okay fine here's what you do

1) Rob the Blackhawks. They have virtually no cap space and need to sign Dylan Strome, Drake Caggiula, Dominik Kubalik, Malcolm Subban.... If you can add a Brandon Saad and Calvin de Haan while only giving up picks or spare parts that's a win.

2) Don't sign any pending UFA's and resign RFA's as cheap as possible. Fill out the bottom half of the roster as cheap as possible. There's going to be some real good depth guys looking for homes for cheap as cap space is going to be limited for a lot of teams.

3) Trade Rasmus Ristolainen for futures. End of the day this roster is too broken to be fixed in a year, so it's best to start getting what you can for some overpriced guys.

Ultimately the goal is to try to put together at least a competitive roster while selling off guys that underperform their contracts as best you can. Signing any UFA's to 1 or 2 year deals so that you can flip them at the deadline for futures and build an actual farm system so that the team can be actually competitive in about 3 years.

This may cost you Eichel eventually, but the rebuild was shanked so hard off the bat that I don't see any other viable option if you want to actually win for more than one year at a time.

the team only has 10 players under contract for next season.

Not sure how to even start when with 3 moves you still only have maybe 2/3's of a roster.

- BINGO!

This hurts to say as a Leafs fan, but this actually puts them in a great position.

The guys they do have under contract are quite good.

Think of all the NHL teams who will be looking to shed bodies this summer (fall? winter? Whenever the frank the off-season occurs) as they try to become cap-compliant.

Think of all the UFAs who will be willing to sign at low prices due to the flat cap and overall poopiness of the NHL economy.

It's practically a blank canvas, and they will hold a lot of bargaining power.

They should be offering to take bad contracts off teams' hands at the cost of many high draft picks.

You cant fix the Sabres in just 3 moves however a competent GM would be a good start.
