Remember. If you can't sign Krug...several sources are saying Cody Ceci is the consolation prize this summer.
- Kooleus

I mean, they're basically the same guy and probably half the price, so to hell with Krug. GET CECI = SABRES SUCCESS!

1. The first move is simple,

To Chicago
Mittelstadt
Johnson

To Buffalo
Seabrooke
Strome
Kubalik
2020 1st (protection for 1st overall pick, turns to. 2021 1st if condition is met)
2020 3rd (Winnipeg)

Basically switches out Strome on the 3C for Mittelstadt. Chicago gets rid of Seabrookes full contract and loses Kubalik along with Strome, however, they shed a lot of salary in this deal.
I think that the Sabres need to keep bringing in picks not necessarily for a rebuild but more along the lines of a culture change and organizational depth.
There are no forward prospects outside of Cozens coming through the pipes - maybe Asplund?
Seabrooke, honestly, I would let him rest for the year and just be a vocal presence and someone who practices with the team. Let him heal and recover for a year and lord knows he could be valuable on the third pairing.
Having a role model and guy who has won the Stanley Cup a couple times is going to give you a better team outlook on accountability and drive to win.

Kubalik adds a punch to the top six for the Sabres. Injecting a guy like him on the team could have a culture change influence within the locker room.
Strome can and will play 2nd line center behind Eichel and this will allow Cozens to develop on the third line. Eventually Strome moves down to the 3rd line or on the wing and provides quality depth. He is resigned on a 2 year, 7.5M contract.
Johnson could be a Keith-lite replacement down the line. A great pickup.
This is a cap dump deal for Chicago to which they still get NHL pieces that will help their retool.

2. The second step concludes trading defensemen.

To Winnipeg
Ristolainen
Johansson (50% retained)

To Sabres
Roslovic
Perreault
Stanley
2020 1st (Winnipeg)

Always been a fan of Roslovic.
I think he’s better suited on the wing, however, given Buffalo‘a situation I think they would cherish the additional depth down the middle.
Between Strome and Roslovic there is a 2C. As well this gives Cozens the availability to start on the 3rd line wing to see where he’s at and continue developing at his own pace with no pressure of “need” coming from fans, management or ownership.
Joker has proven he can hold his own and I think playing with Dahlin they could form an elite top pairing. McCabe and Miller would be a solid second pairing.
Ristolainen plays the Jets style of game and would be a less skilled version of Trouba coming back on the right side.
Stanley adds young depth for the Sabres and with his size reminds a lot of Sabres fans of Myers - albeit a little more physically imposing. Perreault is another older role model who plays the game right and would be a huge boost in the locker room and as an professional example outside of the rink. Could play with Cozens on the 3rd line next year and show him the ropes.

Step three: A goalie.

To Anaheim
Luukkonen
Ullmark
2020 1st (8th overall)

To Buffalo
Gibson

Buffalo gets their goalie of the future and present.
Gibson is a top 5 goalie in the league and Buffalo pays every penny to acquire him. Luukkonen is a great goaltending prospect with starter written in his scouting reports. Ullmark gets the reigns in the crease to showcase his ability and with Anaheim’s rebuild/retool he is given a long look with the organization.
At 8th overall the Ducks will get a very, very good player and continues a low key rebuild that could turn heads in the next couple of years.

Buffalos new roster looks like this;

Olofsson-Eichel-Reinhart
Skinner-Roslovic-Kubalik
Cozens-Strome-Kahun
Girgensons-Larsson-Perreault

Extras: Asplund, Lazar

Dahlin-Jokiharju
McCabe-Miller
Pilut-Montour

Extras: Borgen, Stanley, Samuelsson

Gibson
Hutton

This does not include free agency.
I would also permanently keep the gold away jerseys and use that as a retool for the Sabres logo and jerseys - replacing the white in the logo with gold. Simple, sharp and very elegant looking.

Ok, serious answer now. First, just some general notes that aren't moves: Krueger is fine, don't bring back any UFAs. Don't spend too much in free agency. Any moves made have to help a bit now but be long-term focused.

1. Trade centering around Montour for Tierney. Buffalo adds most likely. I believe Ottawa is pretty loaded at center in the future but the RD depth is weak.

2. Trade Ristolainen for futures or wing depth. For argument's sake, let's say Roslovic and a 2nd or 3rd out of Winnipeg.

3. Trade Reinhart to Colorado. They're weak on the right side behind Rantanen. Maybe looks like Jost (or Compher), Cole (or Zadorov), Kaut, and a 1st (which will be late) for Reinhart and a 2nd.

Next year looks like:

Oloffson - Eichel - Roslovic
Skinner - Tierney - Kahun
Johanasson - Jost - Cozens
Ruotsalainen -Lazar - Okposo

Asplund - Mittelstadt or CJ Smith

Dahlin - Miller
McCabe - Jokiharju
Cole - Replacement level 5/6 UFA

Gilmour or Replacement level 5/6 UFA

Many fans already have the Coyotes, Panthers and Sens moving to Quebec. Do they have enough room for the Sabres too?

Montour and Asplund to Calgary for Monahan
CJ Smith and 2020-21 2nd to Vegas for Tuch
Sign RD DeMelo

- Buff36

Both of those trades are laughable.

Tuch on that contract for an AHLer and a 2nd...

A 30~ goal a year #1 C for a decent depth dman and another AHLer who might become a depth forward in the NHL.

Late to the party but here we go...

1 - a multiple part move; a) resign Johan Larson for 2 years at $1.9m, trade him to NY Rangers in exchange for Sabres 2021-3rd round draft pick used in a previous trade for Jimmy Vesey, with the 2021-3rd in hand Offer Sheet either Cirelli or D Strome at 6 Years $6.5m

2 - Trade Brandon Montour, Marcus Johansson, Rights to Lawrence Pilut (KHL with an out-clause) and Tage Thompson to Winnipeg for Patrik Laine and Dylan DeMelo

3 - Sign UFA Ben Hutton as 2nd pairing LhD

4th move not specified is trade of Rasmus Ristolainen for Futures to refortify 2021 draft picks

Skinner - Eichel - Laine
Olofsson - Cirelli/Strome - Reinhart
Mittlestadt - Cozens - Kahun
Asplund - Lazar - Okposo

Dahlen - DeMelo
Hutton - Jokijarju
McCabe - Miller

1. Trade 2020, 2021 1st's, Montour to Chicago for P. Kane, D. Strome, 2021 2nd.

2. Sign UFA Mike Hoffman.

3. Sign UFA Brendan Dillon.

This is assuming all of our UFA's walk and bury/buyout Okposo to be cap compliant if need be.
