Rick Sadowski: Sakic snubbed in votes for top GM
- Rick Sadowski

Huge Snub! If Lou gets nominated for inking a dozen players into their late 30's, and Sakic adds young affordable talent like Donskoi/Burakovski/Kadri/Namestikov/Bellmere/Nichushkin. None of those contracts are risky. Lou on the other hand signs Eberle until he is 34, Nelson till 34, Lee till 36, Komorov till 35, Pageau till 34, Varlomov till 35 years of age........ Now he is left with 8.5M to ink Barzal, Pulock, and about 4 other players. I am all for Trotz getting some hardware for his Coaching efforts, but Lou has jeopardized the clubs future for the next 5 years.

I think Sakic should 100% be on that list BUT the clubs future is not in jeopardy till it is. GM’s are pretty resourceful when it comes to salaries and getting rid of contracts. Let’s see what he does first as far as signing the players you mentioned before we label him a failure.

I disagree on Sakic. For the last two years, he’s had plenty of opportunity to get a great #1 starting goaltender to go along with a team capable of winning a cup and both years he failed to do so.

Kind of like Toronto’s Dubas and his inability to trade a forward or two for their greatest need, defenseman the past few years.

Overall, Sakic left $5.5M of cap on the table. I realize goaltenders got injured but neither in my opinion are guys who are going to win you a cup.

That’s why I don’t think he deserves to be considered.

Yeah that's a head scratcher for sure, but I'm sure it's more coincidence than not that the finalists are still in the playoffs.

I disagree on Sakic...

I respectfully disagree with your take, sir. Grubauer for sure is not elite, but saying that he isn't capable of backstopping an elite club to the cup might be a stretch. Even so, you are right that he passed on an opportunity to get Lehner. And now Lehner may be pricing himself out of the Avs' budget.

But even if that's the case it looks more and more like spending an enormous amount of money on a goalie isn't necessarily always the best idea. The market for goalies this offseason is saturated, but outside of Lehner there really aren't any worldbeaters.

Matt Murray is kind of intriguing, there is some evidence to suggest that he is a totally different player without Jack Johnson on the ice than when he is, but who wouldn't be? Plus he is linked in rumor to the Avs.

Overall though I'd say Sakic was confident in what he had, and I really don't blame him. He's been very cap frugal and that's only going to help him keep the band together (and add to it) moving forward. I've said before it but I really didn't expect Francouz to collapse like that. But this Stars series was another one that looked familiar to me where the Avs were getting pushed around in the first half of it. I feel like there was some adjustment for the small D like Makar and Girard.

Regardless I think we'll be fine and I'll be OK with things whether the goalies change up or not.

I disagree that Sakic was snubbed. I am not going to say he has done a terrible job, but the man who was TRULY snubbed was Jarmo Kekalinen of Columbus. His team had to recover from their all-in effort last season to win the Cup. After losing Panarin, Bobrovsky etc. who here really thought this would be a playoff team this year?

On the other hand, I'd argue that it was pretty obvious that Columbus probably wasn't going to win the Stanley Cup last year whether they swung for the fences or not. Yeah, Kekalainen has a lot of balls for going for it like that, but he ended up watching all of those free agents bolt with nothing to show for it.

Also, Columbus was on the outside looking in before the plague shut the league down. Yes, it's possible they may have earned a spot had all things played out, but on the other hand they may have fallen away. It is however impressive that they had the success they did in the playoffs, but ultimately I'd have to consider that a major compliment to the coaching staff.

Nope. GM's can only be so creative. Detroit has patiently waited out their bad contracts the past 3 seasons or so, and are now finally seeing the re-boot. But this is the ugliest climate to have a veteran team inked for the long term. I think if they do not pull it together this season or next, Lou will go down in isles history as a dreaded GM. Inking Trotz was easily his best move, and they have serious work to do if they are to retain their young assets.

East is always favoured in awards I think which is unfair.

Secondary, what the hell did Brisbois do?! Riding the coat tails of Yzerman's hard work gets him a nomination?!

I think Sakic deserves it.

I personally think McPhee deserves a nomination AGAIN. He has an expansion team highly competitive in their first 3 years.

I don't think he deserves a nod either. Lou I mean. I think his name with older voters is carrying him a bit. Trotz deserves what he gets but Lou just cobbled together some "grinders" and it's somehow worked out so far.
