I can see why it would be difficult to part with 8th from a buffalo perspective considering their need for a 2C may only be temporary (Unless cozens is developed as a wing) but in Calgary’s end the 8th overall’s starting from 2017 (too early to tell on Boqvist & Broberg) are:

Middlestadt
A. Nylander
Werenski
W. nylander
Ristolainen
Pouliot
Couturier
Burmistrov

That shows a less than A 50% success rate of getting a player as good as monahan. While I do think he is worth no more than the 8th alone it’s easy to see why fans of both teams have their respective opinions due to the potential upside/downside of the pick.

Personally I could see a larger deal involving monahan, Derek Ryan, and rittich for 8th, Kahun, and another player if the flames really wanted to open up cap space to be aggressive in the off-season. But I think it’s likelier the sabres target either a guy that is more of a 2/3 C like davorak or a C/Wing like Domi based on my belief that they will gamble the possibility of cozens becoming good enough to take that spot long term.

Good post.
This Draft is expected to be exceptional in the Top 10, hence why the 8th is valued here.
To use it to secure Monahan who is a defensive liability and benefits greatly from play with Johnny seems crazy to me, yet like you I understand how Calgary fans see him in a better light.

Maybe there is no move to make here, as I would definitely not use the 8th solely on him...and I absolutely loved him coming out if Jrs.

I completely understand.

I also am not worth hundreds of millions of dollars and cannot say I’ve run my own business unless you count doing your own investments.

However, what I do know is that Pegula handed out the equivalent of the Sabres salary cap to McDermott, Dawkins, and Tre White in the last month.

Are the Sabres, alike most NHL franchises apart from maybe NYR and TOR, a boat with a hole in the bottom ? Absolutely.

However Pegula has the money to spend to the cap even if it is taking on contracts like Stepan and Monahan whom although have $6.5M cap hits are both combined to make $5M in real salary this year. (I’m not advocating trading for them I’m just using them as hypothetical examples).

His promise to Sabres nation was that money would not be a issue. However now it is.

Price of gas goes down and price of yacht goes up.

Wake up call when liquid capital runs into non liquid.

Still think he bought sabres to become local hero and be the first guy in line to buy bills.

There are a lot of rich NHL owners who do not spend to the cap. They do not just spend crazy. The Pegulas have money but there are far wealthier owners who are cheaper or have had a smarter business model. They also have teams in bigger markets and may not lose millions due to larger local TV deals and higher ticket prices Here are the 15 wealthiest owners and here is how teams spend. https://www.businessinsid...ade-their-fortune-2019-11

The Penguins are retaining a portion of Bjugstad's salary for the 2020-21 season.

Man, that guy got so much love on here for being traded for a conditional pick and the Pens have to eat some of his salary. Well, time will tell.

Olofsson, Eichel, Okposo all with Lady Byng votes and if anything Reinhart should have been a top 5 finalist for the award.

I wonder if anyone outside Buffalo remembers he exists.

He’s decent when he’s healthy. He’s just never healthy.

1 year deal and it only costs a 7th rd pick.

It’s a good deal for Minn IMO.

They keep on going for players that need a new start
They should be unloading players and start the rebuild

you need to look at their roster no center in the system ..

Only franchise player they have is Kaprizov

I honestly agree with everything said, which is why I would love to see Calgary make that move and recommend that buffalo stay away. With next year potentially being shortened I would target a stop gap player to see what cozens can do on the 3rd line. You’re only going to spend 8th overall on a permanent solution and as I said unless you develop him as a wing it may be his spot to lose in a year or 2’s time. It would be best keep it and trade next years 1st or to address another area of need or if necessary. Or maybe trade it to address another area as well.

As for monahan it’s disappointing to see a player that had that much potential stop developing and become complacent with being a passenger to his linemate, something I think happened around 3 years ago or so.
