They got him for Marcus Johansson.

I fail to see the downside of this deal.

Most of the GM for day posts dealt him for a 4th, and just dumping his salary made that feel optimistic. I'm shocked they pulled this move off.

The downside is the exact same conversation in 365 days, as I’ve stated would happen before.

I like getting Staal for nothing. That’s good work.

Kick that can baby.

They just bought themselves another year to not make a meaningful trade

- sbroads24

There is not much of a difference between Staal and Monahan in terms of your philosophy for “win this year”

The gap between the value of the 8th overall pick and Mojo is much larger.

Staal is a 2C/3C and we have holes at both.

Glad to see all the self-congratulating insiders break all this news or any piece of it before it took place.

The little birdies must not be chirping.

So what if he brings in another center, like a Domi, for 3c and cozens is the real deal and progresses to 2c after staal’s contract is up.

If Cozens doesn’t progress and Staal plays ok, you re-up him for a year.

If Staal doesn’t play well. At least he’s a center. And you revisit next year with a different crop of free agents, rfa’s and a year removed from Covid.

I see zero downside in this move. I will give the power trio props on this one! Solid solid move.

ehhhh..... We'll see how it works out, color me skeptical.. if it's going to have any meaningful difference we need so many more moves... but I guess its a start. Not thrilled he is 35/36

I mean if I’m stunned, can’t blame the player actually involved in the deal whom has to relocate his family

Uh-o. He’s gonna Bergland the Sabres. Lol

I thought he had a clause in his contract. No trade. No movement.

One of them is old enough to be pretty much cooked at any second though

Being around Stall for 365 days will also help Cozens be more ready to be the next 2C. Should also be good for Jack.

If he retires, then we just shaved 4.5M off the books to use.

The only downside is staals age. But I mean he makes 3.25 million for this coming year. It’s not a “bad” contract.

As long as this isn’t the only sabres move this offseason. I think it’s an okay start.

I’m actively rooting for this team to solve long term problems with long term solutions.

When that happens I’ll be excited.

Don’t take me not coming in my pants over a 36 year old center as me actively rooting against it. It’s an upgrade for sure. For one freaking year

Won a cup with Adams, maybe Staal thinks Buffalo offers a better chance at winning than Minny. Can’t see why Minny would make this trade.
Edit: thought staal had nmc. Still don’t see why Minny does this deal.
