Anthony Travalgia: Which direction do the Jets take with their backup goalie? Jets backup goalie Laurent Brossoit is a UFA, will he be back in Winnipeg next season?

LOL

Tanner, I love NWA, but I do not see how this song relates to the Jets back-up goalie question.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Broissoit back with the Jets this season. Decent price probably and they need a goalie to expose in Expansion draft.

Regardless, don't see the Jets spending over $2 mill for back-up goalie, probably less. Seems like lots of goalies out there looking for jobs.

We go with the best goalie we can sign for between 1 and 1.5m.

Brossoit was good, if chemistry with Helly is a real factor then we know it works and he needs consideration on that regard. It is a good year to be looking for a starting goalie and therefore also a good year to be shopping for a backup. In the 1.25m price range Brossoit is probably still my guy for the jets.

IF the worst happens and Helly is injured in the playoffs then is it really going to be Brossoit who gets leaned on? or do we jump right down the list to the Berdin? Brossoit would have a short leash in that circumstance.

With the Habs trading for the rights to Joel Edmundson, is it just me that thinks that the Habs might sign Edmundson, and then try and flip him plus a C (Szuzuki/ Kotkaniemi/Domi) + to the Jets? Hoping it's not Domi! Probably all speculation on my part!

I'm good with Broissoit for $1.5 as well - two years.

Let me stop you right there. You don’t trade for a player like that just to sign him and trade him away immediately. Montreal picked up Edmundson’s rights because they genuinely believe he’s an NHL level defenceman.

As for your hypothetical trade, what are they getting for Edmundson, a top 6 forward, and whatever that “+” is?

*EDIT* Oh, Edmundson is BAD bad:

Really don't think this deal would go down, but crossed my mind. Why wouldn't the Habs flip Edmundson, I'm sure it must have been done before by NHL teams. They would have to re-sign him before October 9, I believe, in order to do this.

But the fact is the Jets need some grit and muscle or they may as well not even field a team. See Mark Borowiecki is out there - and is tough as nails. He'd make the Jets other players bigger in a hurry. You don't sign him long-term but one-two years max.

Of course we still need that #2 C and would be nice to have a true "horse" on the RH side of the blue-line (Ekblad comes to mind, or maybe we can pry Pulock out of the Island since they have cap problems?)

Not sure why you're so down on Edmundson, big tough guy who takes care of his own end and think the Blues missed him and Pat Maroon in these playoffs.

I’m not down on Edmundson, I’m acknowledging what he is. He doesn’t take care of his own end at all. He’s pretty bad defensively.
Borowiecki is also pretty bad.

Ekblad and Pulock would be good choices, as would Devon Toews.
The issue there is you’re talking about how an elite defenceman like Ekblad would be ideal. This is as obvious as it is unlikely to be possible.
Pulock is possible, but again, unlikely. Chevy won’t try for an offer sheet anywhere, and he won’t want to pay the price for one of the Isles RFAs

Why do you think Ekblad is impossible? Florida wants to change lanes, so ? I'd be down with Toews if all else failed, well, not all else. He's decent.

Pulock would be #1 goal on d - assuming Pietrangelo is going back to ST.L. But it would be a trade not an offer sheet.

Ekblad? Pionk and a couple of other pieces like our top prospect Vesalainen and our 2nd (almost said Copp but then i remembered who I was talking to)? lol It's been said the Panthers want to shed salary. But probably the Panthers would want more - but hope we check it out.

A: Florida isn’t trading Ekblad. It’s not happening.
B: Trading Copp for a player in any position other than C, and at a steep upgrade, is a huge mistake. We are not gifted with many players capable of creating all on their own. Last year, the only genuine player drivers we had were Ehlers, Scheifele, Copp, and to a lesser extent Laine.
C: That trade offer isn’t enough for Ekblad

There’s a ton of good options.

So it will probably be Hutch.

The Jets have their back-up goalie, they picked him off waivers from Detroit last year, and when that doesn't work out they have Berdin who is going into his 3rd pro year might as well see if he is ready.

Comrie isn’t good in the AHL, if that’s who you’re referring to.

Berdin is probably ready

Exactly Rexpoo, though the Jets organization have some fascination that they can make him into an NHL goalie.

What are you talking about? Comrie is great! There is a reason why our GM picked him back up of waivers when he was waived.

If Comrie is not going to make the leap, then it's time to bring on the birdman!!!

Realistically speaking, I am hoping we can get Cam Talbot or Corey Crawford. Both should not cost the Jets more than 3 million. Would make excellent back-ups and take lots of pressure of my main man, Connor Hellebyuck!!!

They’re both coming off strong seasons, likely on their last chance at a decent contract, and will both want to be starters. Bad move

Comrie is 25 years old, and was slightly above league average this year. In the AHL. After many subpar seasons.

I am not sure you read Anthony's article where he is talking about successful playoff teams having a 1A and 1B option. Both Crawford and Talbot make excellent 1B options.

He is also drafted and developed by the Jets. Wade Flaherty makes all goalies he coaches great!
