Super random question...

The limit on retention is 50%, but can a player be retained on twice? Did they do that with Brassard?

Example: Player X gets traded to Team B, and Team A retains 50%, then Team B trades said player to Team C, and Team B retains 50%.

- Rinosaur

Pretty sure the 50% refers to the total allowed amount of salary retention.

I wouldn’t call what the rangers did a full rebuild. They just got extremely lucky.
- Feds91Stammer

I’m pretty sure they were very open about the fact that they weren’t going to be looking to make any key moves to improve their team in the short run and begin the rebuild.

SJs plan was to dump more fuel (Kane and Karlsson) into the already sinking titanic.
- Feds91Stammer

San Jose made some terrible moves.

They still have a #1 center, if Karlsson and Burns are healthy two 1RDs and a few other decent players in there. Also a lot of cap space in the most valuable year to possibly have cap space.

I'd trade Burns and capitalize on other teams short term cap problems. One more year of suck and they could turn the ship around.

habs would never agree to that trade; they wouldn't take letang for petry straight up
- firebettmanplease

I know. I was just responding to the Habs fan about what the Pens have that the Habs would want for Domi. Unless they want our 2022 1st, I don't see a trade between the two teams. They just traded for the rights for Edmundson for their 2LD, so they wouldn't want Petts as part of a larger package.

As for salary retention, Lehner had his salary retained twice in the same transaction so it went from $5M to $2.5M (50%) and then from $2.5M to $1.4M (44%).

VGK traded the 2nd round pick we sent them to take Fluery to Toronto in the first part.

I think they did a pretty thorough rebuild. They certainty traded away a lot of good players for futures. As Rino mentioned, they were smart enough to realize their door to contention had closed and chose to start rebuilding while they still were sort of competitive and had a lot of players other teams wanted.

I do agree with you they had good lottery luck. They also had the advantage of being New York and being able to get guys like Panarin and Fox to sign with them.

Really they just got insane value for pending UFAs. They lucked out on Panarin and won 2 lottos.

Not saying it was a bad idea but they didn’t make any really hard decisions.

Speaking of MIN, would you trade Jarry for Staal if the Pens could get Andersen for a 3rd or something (or Murray)? As much as I like Jarry, I'd probably do that. Supposedly Guerin likes Jarry but not Murray.

We'd have a decent amount of cap left to fill out the bottom six and/or 3RD. Could pay McCann and keep him at 3LW. I don't know of many (if any) teams could match McCann - Staal - Horny as their third line.

You're talking about the results. They made a conscious decision that they made public that they won't be pursuing trades to increase their chances of making the playoffs and are doing a rebuild even though they could possibly compete as a bubble team. Panarin wanted to be in NY and that was obviously a long-term decision.

Dude all they did was move expiring contracts. That’s not a rebuild.

That's not all they did. They made a public decision that they will not be trying to make moves to improve the team and instead begin their rebuild. I don't see how it gets any more clear than that. They literally left nothing to the imagination.

It was even well known at the time that they gave Henry the option of trying to move him, but he decided to stay through it.

Maybe Eakins could fill the 3c for the Pens. He seems to be just the type of guy they are looking for.

I know they released a statement but agree to disagree. A rebuild does not include a panarin signing or a trouba signing.

In no way, shape or form did the Rangers do a rebuild. Retool and change the mix, yes. You don't sign two of the top available free agents in a rebuild.

If you read the article they called it a rebuild on the fly. IMO a retool is really something you do in one off-season. They're in year three of what they started.

I thought Trots was double shifting Barzal, he’s actually taking turns double shifting Clutterbuck or Martin with Barzal. Crazy Bastard.

I wasn't thinking for us. It was just a general curiosity. I feel like he's definitely upped his value since going to the lightning.

All I know is the Rangers will have a 6M cap hit for Shattenkirk to play for someone else.

Eakins is basically Brandon Sutter. He looks good and can put up some points, but he ends up spending most of his time in his own end.
