But the Leafs are a huge mess with no future, right? The final 4 teams all rank in the top 8 of oldest teams Although I do like Tampa going forward. So many good assets they can move to clear cap space.

3 quarters of the NHL at least is right with them. And their core is locked-up. Yes, they can improve even with doing nothing.

Marner and Matthews - that's about it as for "elite" category players on the Leafs.

Dallas has Heiskanen in that category.

The difference is that Leafs have mediocre guys like Johnsson and Kerfoot on the 2nd/3rd line, while Dallas has Richardinson, Cogliano, Comeau, Perry, etc. on their bottom half -- and apart from Rielly, none of Leafs defensemen would make the Dallas top4 D lines.

those are all older vets that added in the last couple years (except Richardinson)..players teams can add pretty much any off season.

they'll never get equitable return for Tavares or marner..........both are ridiculously overpaid

the ONLY player they can trade, get good value for, and free up cap space is Nylander, but that basically turns them into a one line team.......and what little depth they had is gone.

I've said it before and proved it right with the Kapanen trade, many Leafs players make less $$ than their cap hits. This is huge with COVID 19 losses and so many teams cutting budget. Make no mistake, Kapanen making only 1.8 in cash was increasing his value.
