By all reports, Askarov will be off the board by #14 anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem for Edmonton.

Trade Nurse for Nylander or Boeser.

Then trade the #1 pick in a deal involving Kuemper.

Sign Eric Haula for 3C.

No one would want Nurse for Nylander or Boeser hahahaha. Nurse is nowhere near as valuable as them.

Staal traded to Buffalo and all it cost 'em was Johannson. This some bullpoop man. Are you telling me that we couldn't provide a somewhat more decent offer than that???

Staal has a 10 team no trade list. Wanna bet Edmonton was on it?

Honestly, there are worse teams to add a to the 10 team no-trade list.

But are we just gonna ignore the fact that Buffalo isn't on it?? I so confused. This trade is just bizarre.

I can’t wrap my head around it from Minnesota’s perspective, that’s for sure.

Holland might’ve pitched an offer though, we can’t say that he didn’t. What’s more, Minnesota hasn’t exactly been acting rational as of late.

I don't support drafting Askarov, but I've encountered a compelling argument regarding early goalie draftees having only a slightly lower rate of impact within 4 years than forwards and actually a better bet than forwards to have sustained success. I'll have to find the source or try to replicate the methodology, but it certainly countered the seemingly dominant narrative re: drafting goalies high.

There were reports before the trade deadline that he submitted a list full of contenders trying to block any trade as they'd be the ones who wanted him for the stretch run, not a team way out like Sabres. Im not sure the rules of a limited no trade clause but maybe you're only able to submit the list once and those stand as the teams.

If you could have Vasilevskiy but you had to wait 5 seasons for him to arrive, you wouldnt want that? Sorry about your rose colored glasses but this team is unlikely to compete before then anyways.

Koskinen was just fine until the team defense collapsed in front of him after 4 months off. Sure, we could use a long term solution, but that need isn't our biggest need; it's the 3rd line.

As for not competing, if the Oilers had an even league average 3rd line (~46% GF), the team's 5-on-5 goal share would be ~50%. This would equate to a net of 14 more goals (+7 for, -7 against) for the team and place them 6th in the league for total GF and 13th in the league for total GA (230GF, 208GA).

In case you're not keeping track, this would place them WELL within the realm of "competing" though outside of the true contenders- though Dallas and the Isles haven't let not being "true contenders" stop them.

what's up boys, was shooting the poop with my brother last night regarding draft day trades.............

what do you guys think of a trade between Ottawa and edm as follows:

14th pick, pulijjarvi, Russell (as a dump to create some cap relief for you)

for

isles 1st, Ottawa's 2nd (32nd overall), and gustafsson (our top goalie prospect)

Well, because the defense is diggity dogpoop and only going to get worse when Larsson walks next season. If you think Ethan Bear is ready for top 2 on a contending team in the NHL you're just an oilers fan because you dont know (frank) all about hockey. It will be a few years before Bouchard and Broberg establish themselves as *impact* NHL defenders, so no matter who you pick the team is 3 years out from contending for anything more than a participation ribbon in the NHL playoffs.

Furthermore, you dont use your first round pick to improve the third line, that's insanity. Those guys are a dime a dozen on the open market.

If you insist on having a less-than-civil discussion on the matter, then I can oblige ya, but will refrain getting too condescending yet.

First, moving the goal post from 5 years stated in your original post to 3 years here strikes me as disingenuous, if unsurprising.

Second, your argument was centered around competing, not contending. This distinction is commonly made as "competing for the playoffs" as opposed to "contending for a Cup". Whether you use it as such or not doesn't invalidate the fact that I clearly drew the distinction in my response.

Third, I'll address your Bear point even though it's your own tangent. What's your reasoning behind why Bear couldn't develop into a solid compliment on a top pairing? He just took his game to new heights over the course of a single offseason before which just about no one thought he'd be a top-4 Dman.

Over the past few years we've seen guys like Stralman (TB), Bouwmeester (STL), Pelech (NYI), arguably Martinez (VGK) and others play the supporting role on the 1st pairing of various contenders. Of course, I won't sit here and suggest any of our current NHL Dmen are of the quality of the players these guys partnered with.

Lastly, at no point did I suggest that we use our 1st round pick to fix the 3rd line. In fact, the only position I took was against your suggestion that the team is incapable of competing for another 5 years and should therefore draft Askarov. I illustrated a clear path that could see the team competing next year and- as the old saying goes- once you're in the playoffs, who knows what can happen...

except your clearly all-seeing, omnipotent eye, oh holy one (there's the condescension)

Interesting idea but I'd probably say no. A 14th overall pick in this deep draft is quite valuable. Not to mention I'm probably the few who still think Pulj may be a part of our middle 6 in the long run. Gustafsson doesn't seem liek he is doing too well in the AHL either. Cap dump of Russell is enticing tho.
