It's beacuse Dubas didn't sign him. It's bad. Holl deal is far better and people on here think he's overpaid. - RogerRoeper
Sorry Roger, this is baloney. I am totally biased, that said, there are very few good deals on the Leafs at the moment.
Reilly - good deal
Hyman - good deal
Andersen - good deal (this one is open to debate)
Campbell - good deal
There are a few ok deals like Nylander perhaps but no other bargains I can see realistically. You want to see some good deals? Check out the Bruins on cap friendly - they have several, and not too many bad ones either.

What if the Habs trade Price and roll with Allen? Or what if, they only got Allen because he is a capable back up and the Habs want to give Price some rest? - PatC80
15 million on goalies is fine. But 40 million on 4 forwards... |

THe signing bonuses are a massive advantage. It's a bigger advantage that "Taxes" peopel whine about. Pietrangelo can get, what 13 million placed in his account the morning he signs. - RogerRoeper
must be why dubas signs all of our players at discounts. making good use of those signing bonuses |

I'm saving so much money because of covid that I'm dumping it all into aftermarket bike parts for tinkering and building a cx bike. It's a terrible habit to form. - TheMussel

Who can't you trade on the Leafs? And Bruins players signed very high deals at the time they were signed. Did you know Marchand had worse numbers than Nylander? And Coyle is a real bad recent one.
My point is Leafs idea of a "Bad Contract" is Mitch Marner. Other teams have Ladd, Skinner, Bobrovsky ETC.
If Marner was a 1 time 60 point player when he signed his deal he's get much lower. He had 94 points. He had 69 playing a lot on the 3rd line the year before... |

Hopefully, it works in the Leafs favour.. Maybe he noticed that Tavares got $15M as a bonus.. Wants the same - PatC80
We can hope, I still tend to think this is all posturing from Pietro's side, but if he actually makes it to UFA, then its possible.

20% escrow in years one and two ....and 10% deferral in year one.
I'm thinking players will want the bigger payday to be in years 3+. |

Roger... this is not some sort of videogame of 'which team has the most contracts it can trade'.
This is about winning hockey games and the Stanley Cup.
all the rest, including # of goals scored, how great the team looks 'on paper' and other similar less relevant things shouldn't matter. it's about winning.
you can keep on repeating that Nylander is better than Marchand - but Bruins have consistently outperformed the Leafs over the last years. |

I get it and admit I was weak.
We can handle a mix of hockey, music, food, Zezel’s sex life and political discussion with just about anybody except those two and a few of the crazies that drop by occasionally. There are people , like Tumbleweed, that I disagree with vehemently but can talk to.
But yeah, I get sucked in with those guys and I end up pissed off because I’m scared poopless about what’s going on in the States. |

Numbers, numbers, numbers.....
It is why these "Number" GMs will never build a Cup winner. You gotta look at the WHOLE hockey player.
Any twit who would covet Nylander over Marchant (and I hate the little rat) knows as much about hockey as I know about nuclear physics (which is squat).
Nylander wouldn't wipe Brad's big nose when it comes to building a winning hockey team. These comparison's are so lame.... |

I find it hard to believe that 20% escrow in year one is going to cover it.
I'd put it at 50%.
It's going to get awkward when teams have to claw back money they've already paid out. |

I never said that and no one thinks that. You're not getting my comment. It was simply using facts and overall perspective on the idea Marchand is so underpaid and took a pay cut. He simply could not have asked for more at the time. Same with Bergeron.
It's like the idea Mackinnon took a paycut, right? These players use numbers to get their money.
