there was a lot of hype around him for sure
- TheMussel

It looked pretty damn good when he scored 30 goals as a centre that one time.

Sadly, guy had way too much problems off ice for him to succeed.

I meant Galchenyuk.

Koivu will probably still want a decent amount of $$$.

I would buy a Koivu leafs jersey if he signed here

For the people that complain about taxes.

Article XVI of the US-Canada tax treaty states that signing bonuses paid to a resident of the US by a Canadian team are taxed at 15% in Canada, and vice versa for US teams paying bonuses to Canadian residents.

Having his signing bonus taxed at the low rate of 15% in Canada ensures that Tavares would receive a full foreign tax credit on his US return for all taxes paid in Canada on both is signing bonus and his salary each season. If he plans properly, he could save over $11.7 million over the life of his contract.

You mean Galchenyuk?

No way it works unless Minny retains salary. We need less money on forwards, not more.

I will say I really wanted Galchenyuk at the 2012 draft. Glad he was taken and we ended up with Rielly in hindsight.

- Leafs43

I meant Galchenyuk, yeah.

Is he still under contract? I got the impression from the tweet that they weren't gonna re-sign him and he'd be a free agent.

Circumstantial. I feel like given where the team was viewed contention wise (for some reason a lot of pundits felt the blueline took substantial jumps and that was the missing link), having already played the game with Nylander... The media fanbase ownership and everyone in between would have considered it unacceptable to have an opening day lineup without him in it.

The preferred option would have been to extend Marner at the lower number as our resident village idiot pointed out. However while he uses that as a torch to flame Dubas with, he has zero respect for how quickly he would have loaded an 8.5 per contract into the 'Dubas is an idiot' cannon for a kid who hadn't broken 70 points. Remember... This was at a time when Draisaitl and his 8.5 million per year was considered a not so great contract, yet we are totally expected to believe the pundits would have celebrated Dubas for giving Marner the same contract after two 69 point NHL seasons...

I blame Marner for that contract. He saw his situation and he made the decision to fold his hometown team over a barrel knowing was the difference between being rich and richer, and would restrict the team going forward.

- joel878

I think we all blame Marner (and to a lesser extent Babcock) for the contract he signed..
Marner was supposed to be the easy one of the three.. Local kid, grew up a Leafs fan..

yeah. Thanks everyone.

I booked a trip there for U.S. Thanksgiving a few months ago. I was pretty sure I was going to have to cancel.

My concern all along was infecting him. Now, if he gets past this, I am thinking maybe I can go after all. We can separate our household when I return. The thing is, it is still such a poop show down there, I still don't think I can go.

- Aetherial

I guess you wouldn’t be able to see him if you went down now

Looks like you're right. I though he still had a year left.

Well then sure, I will also accept cheap reclamation projects at forward.

I still think he should have absolutely maxed out at 10.5 million. He had no negotiating power over that amount.

But Dubas seemed to think last year was the year and didn't want to risk a holdout I think. So he caved.

If they were smart enough to use their situation to their advantage... They were also smart enough to know that contract would more than likely result in him being traded out of Toronto before its expiration.

So to me, the contract showed where Marner's loyalties lie, and ultimately its to the dollar, not the Leafs.

There were discussions at the time on here on 'Nylander vs Marner'. People were suggesting 6.5-7.5 for Nylander (I thought less than 6 would be more appropriate) and up to 8mln for Marner (on a long term deal). 8.75mlnx8 I maybe would have called a slight overpayment, but we can back to those threads and I'm quite sure I said 'sign Marner now on a long term deal of around 8-8.5. So not an overpayment at all.
I have really really liked Marner as a player from the start on though, so surely some bias there.

- MaximusAurelius

It's all hindsight ....so we're all guessing.

The summer of 18' the best comp out there was Draistl who was 1 yr into his 8 x 8.5.

By most accounts now MM wasn't going to sign an 8 yr deal. He, AM, and all of these hipster poops want to maximize their career earnings by going shorter 3/5/6 on contract number 2 and then locking in long term at max dollar well into their 30's. It totally makes sense ...

So, you're KD in the summer of 18' what are you willing to table in that climate?

8 x 8.5 or even 9? ...yah, probably but MM says no more than 5/6.

So you reply with fine, less years means less $$ ..surely less than LD and his 8.5, no? KD loves MM. I'm pretty confident he would have paid him anything remotely close to fair in that climate. The better guess is that MM wan't something more than what was "fair" in that summer.

My guess is MM wanted 6 x 9+ and Dubas wasn't ready to go there.

The rest is history. Marner goes out and kicks ass and it costs the Leafs about 1.5 milly per year.

And yet he's not considered in the genius analysis you posted.

Not without mentionning Mikheyev is a 25 year old signed from the KHL while Suzuki is a 21 year old coming into his first pro season.

I'd take a chance on him on the cheap for one season. Only a one year deal, though. No need to do what they did with Petan and Holl and give more years than needed.

Yes, that was discussed in AM's context as well. ALOT of "Canadian" players take up residency in the US as soon as possible.

Read a good piece some time ago about Clarke MacArthur. He moved to Florida once he was LTIR'd to maximize his paycheques.

Yeah, I agree.. Marner's loyalties are tied to money.. That's probably why the report of the CBJ offer sheet became public knowledge.
