Shame about MAB. He seemed like a good fit for the bottom pair and brought a nice physical element. Not a game changing type of player, but just a good type of player every team could use. Basically the Hagg role but a better skater and a little more pop.

Disagree. Don't think he would have been a regular NHL player at all. Had a nice short spurt then not much imo.

But it goes to the point of the question.

Who would the Flyers have dealt to acquire Eric Staal? Keep in mind we are living in reality and not EA sports NHL 2021.

I'm sure every team had some level of interest in him. What degree of interest they had and what they'd be willing to give up to acquire him is the question.

Bill,

I really enjoyed the Marc-Andre Bourdon bit today. It's always neat to read a "Where are they now?" on ex-Flyers players.

I live in Virginia, not far from Liberty University, and your post also led me to google Hockey Ministries International. I never knew about this ministry and after bouncing around their website I will be making a donation to their cause. I ended up on their youtube page, and have seen Mike Fisher, David Backes, Mike Gartner and Shane Doan discuss their faith.

None of this would have happened without your post today. Thanks.

I am sure they did... it was Chuck Fletcher who brought Staal to the Wild when many thought he was cooked at age 32.

But having interest vs. having the cap space and someone Minnesota would prefer in return was the rub.

Minnesota has to be one of the dumbest teams in league. Johansen plays better at wing than center. Whenever played at center hasn’t worked out. And he makes more than staal. This trade make absolutely zero sense. Pretty sure staal wasn’t requesting to go to buffalo so why not just put it out there he’s available. Surely could’ve gotten better. Good for buffalo tho

Well isnt it the GM's job to inquire? Just because they took a center from buffalo doesnt mean they may not want someone else on the flyers does it?

Dont think cap space would have been an issue as he isnt breaking the bank. Player fit very possible.

Until/unless the Flyers open some more cap space, taking on a $3.25M cap hit for your 3rd line center, even as a one-year rental, would make things very tight.

That said, I wish the Flyers had beaten the Sabres in on this. I'd have felt more comfortable about the middle six.

Thanks, Bill! Great read as always. If they re-sign Elliott or sign a vet from FA, I think a one year deal makes the most sense.

I don’t know why they’re surprised the isles “came at them hard”. They had the same struggles against them in the regular season. It was a miracle that series went the distance

MAB had some promise. Terrible luck for him

The return seems very odd for Minny. Added money, seems they downgraded player wise. On the surface would think a better return was available.

Based on your experience dealing with NHL people how often do you think GM's make deals without putting the player on the market so to speak? Now this excludes if they are doing a favor for the player and moving him where he wants to go.

Tight yes but doable. Also some salary would have had to go the other way even if less than what Staal is making.

when we signed Elliott to his 2 year deal, and then his 1 year extension, they seemed like the perfect deals to make based on where Hart was at in his development

the hope of course would be that Elliott would embrace his role as a veteran mentor backup to Hart, and that Hart would flourish with that kind of support

it's gratifying to see that that's what happened, and one of my biggest hopes for this team is that we can keep this goalie tandem going for awhile. If Hart develops into a consistent top end goalie I think Elliott will deserve a not small amount of credit for that

I like Johansen, especially if the one from his Boston playoff series shows up. He actually has a skill set the Flyers need, consistency is the issue
