Tavares was going to sign with anyone other than the Isles in the Metro out of respect for the Islanders. He literally stated that. I am not sure why Panarin decided to not come here or seemingly not even entertain the notion. - mickel25
Because his gf is a model and needed to be where she can work. Miami la or nyc |

Funny, I would have thought that more teams than only Philadelphia and New York would have been interested in Panarin, and that more than 7 teams would have liked to talk to Tavares. - jmatchett383
Well, there is not much in common in the cities that JT talked to other than they were mostly strong to very strong teams. Dallas, San Jose, Leafs, NY, Boston are all big city teams. and the outlier Tampa is a perpetual contender. Two years go, when JT was making his decision, Sharks were a division winner.
NY and Boston are not that far from Philly, so it's unlikely to be culture. The weather spans the spectrum. Taxes are not there in Dallas and Tampa but they are there everywhere else.
My suspicion then is this: They did not consider Philly to be a contending team when they made their decision. To be fair, this year was (ostensibly) a jump for us, which they did not foresee.

The flyers organization has been irrelevant for a a decade now. Have been at best a average team. Money is pretty much equal all around. Lets be honest Philly is a poophole, and yes many live in jersey I get it. - login
A lot of players live in Philly. With the money players make it’s going to be nice no matter what city they live in. Jersey? Really? If you were a rich young guy you’d rather live in Voorhees than Old City? |

It was pretty well known that Tavares wanted to play for his hometown Leafs.
Panarin wanted the New York Spotlight - MBFlyerfan[.

We have a divergence of opinion, ladies and gentlemen.
More to the point though, Tavares apparently talked with 6 teams. So the answer is somewhere in between. |

Thing is, every player has preferences like this. So, you let your bidders compete to overcome such preferences if they want to badly enough. $ talks.
But they did not even talk to Philly $. Thats the part I find somewhat revealing.

JVR played well for the most part in the regular season but I think it's a pretty strong possibility that the player and the contract does not age well. In the current cap environment, teams are going to be very reluctant to take on long term deals. - MJL
unless is it cap floor for a team that needs scoring and PP help or expansion, I think both are long shots. I guess a package is the only way you get value. JVR, picks for a roster fit back. Even is Patrick comes back and lets say he gets close to his rookie season, even if Lindblom comes back to form, they are still missing speed in the O

IF Allison is a complete surprise and is NHL ready this year, then maybe you can move JVR for picks but man that is a long shot from a timing perspective and a team wanting that contract perspective.
note- I think JVR had a decent season, its the years that make the dollars bad. guy has great hands though... |

I’m not sure bedsheets boy is the best example to use. He used the market to milk every penny out of the team he intended on signing with from the start. - hereticpride

Not sure why you’re so angry at Philadelphia? I’ve lived in a few big and not so big cities around the country. They all have their good and bad sides. They all can be pretty great if you have $$$. Philly is not Manhattan or LA or Chicago even, but it’s a pretty decent city in my opinion. |

How am I angry? Calling it a poophole doesn't equate to me being angry. Been here my whole life. Seen it go from great to well not so great. Agree money makes the happiness no doubt. |

I don't know. I think you'll be able to find a deal. Like in all honesty would JVR for Kessel be that bad of a deal for both teams? It's not like AZ is a top FA places so now they have someone who probably plays in their top 6 long term.

Calling it a poophole seemed angry to me. Hard to interpret intent sometimes here. Funny, I think it’s better than it used to be in a lot of ways. Much better food scene. Anyway. I’m just saying, if I were a free agent with a lot of teams interested in me I wouldn’t shy away from signing with the Flyers because they play in Philadelphia. |

The quality of living in Philly is very high, imo, but in a very concentrated area. It's walkable, very good restaurants, good hospitals, a great university, nice parks, good museums, great sports traditions, and most important, very, very affordable compared to competitors.

By the way, I was thinking of doing a little Philly foodie post, stemming from the time we were chatting about best cheesesteaks before game 2 against the Habs.
The idea is - name your favorite hidden/secret places/dishes to eat in Philly that are affordable (average menu prices/dishes named must be less than $20 tops). Must be in Philly proper, not burbs or joisey.
Hidden/secret means that it can't be something like John's Roast Pork or DeNics. Known to all Philly people even though it might qualify as a hidden gem for out-of-towners.
Affordable: as above.
Some time in the next couple of weeks. Any interest, or you guys gonna get on my case for hijacking thread? I could wait till after SCF....
