Brodin just signed 6 x 7.

That is far from being squeezed.

Well Joel Edmundson got $3.5M x 4 years....if thats any indication, actual good defencemen will get a lot more.

So do players with an NTC or M-NTC have to be protected for the Seattle Expansion Draft? Or is it only players with NMCs?

But 4.5 million gets you lower end top 4 Dmen. (Ceci - blegh)

Obviously the actual options matter, maybe the Leafs can pick up a good value contract in a trade.

But right now, I take Pietro, Rielly and Muzzin as our top three and hope the #4 can be filled internally. (Muzzin has been a pretty good babysitter when healthy)

I worry that the options at 4.5 million a year are going to be severely underwhelming.

There are tons of quality defenseman making less than 4.5 million a year.

David Savard, John Klingberg, Damon Severson, Josh Manson, Adam Larsson, Brett Pesce, Alex Martinez, Jason Demers, Connor Murphy, Matthias Ekholm.... The list goes on.

They aren't all Cody Ceci's in that range. Even Ceci was a one off at that price tag, doubt he makes anything close to that ever again.

Although he has some recent concussion issues..... we could probably pry away Timmins out of Colorado 🤔

Young RHD straight outta St. Catharines 👍

Timmins and Jost
for
Kerfoot and Hollowell

Pretty sure he played in the Soo too... So doobs must love him.

But I doubt you get him alone let alone with Jost for Kerfoot and a half eaten bagel.

Yup I take them too but

I just don't like putting all my eggs in one basket.
It also takes away from the Leafs depth.
You still could get a 6M dman and a less one or a fwd.
Also for me, 5 players taken up most of the cap, something gotta give or go.

Minnesota took on more money in the Johanssen trade. Gave a lot of money to Brodin.. They might be screwed soon, as they need to get a goalie somehow and need some offensive help.

I think maybe we can make something work in our favour with Minnesota?

Which is why I mentioned the fact that the leafs could trade for a good value contract.

But right now, picking up a good value contract in free agency for a defenseman who is a good fit isn't looking promising.

Yeah, I really dont get what Geurin is trying to do. They clearly need a rebuild, not a retooling.

Definitely not, as is typically the story in free agency. Demelo has to be the best bet at a reasonable contract there.

Would you rather have two $5.5M players then Matthews? Its a similar type of return, but on the defensive side. Pietro is a bit underrated if you ask me.

I never said it was. My point is that so far defenseman are not getting squeezed. Maybe that changes, maybe the money and cap space dry up and the remaining defenseman have to take much less - but that hasn't happened yet.

I think his next paycheque will show he's not very underrated.

Either way, he's not Matthews.

Not underrated in the league, but on message boards from fans he is. He is one of the best dmen in the league, and he's a right shot dman. He's exactly what the Leafs need.

Id take him over two $4.5M players any day. I dont think he leaves the Blues, but id love to have him.

I propose that the Leafs identify all of the very best contracts in the league and then get those players for their roster.

All of those players have been signed for a while, and before they were actually good.

Sure its easy to use value contracts. But seriously, would you trade Matthews for Couturier and Konency, or Sheifele and Ehlers?

I wouldn't, just based on the idea that our blueline as a whole is in such disarray. He's only one player, and he can't play the entire game.

I think we've seen the same premise play out at forward, you can stack the top line all you want... If the bottom lines can't cut it it's all for nothing.

A team needs balance to be successful in this league. There are no teams going deep that are stacked on the top end and weak throughout the rest of the lineup, these teams are reliable regardless which line and pairing is on the ice.

His contract will be to restrictive given the makeup of this team as well, they just can't add another high end contract that probably won't age well and have the flexibility to roll with the punches over the next few years.

Toronto's blueline has been awful for years, they need two guys far more than they need one.
