He's 37. Scored 4 goals. 8 the season before.
- gergeswillems

So if you extrapolate, does that mean he will score 2 goals this year or 0 goals this year?

Asking for Dubas a friend.

Not sure. He'll be great in the playoffs though. Right, Roger?

My daughter plays the guitar. We go camping a bit in summer, so she is always bugging us to suggest songs that people can sing at a campfire (a.k.a. Songs that old farts know by heart).

And growing up, my parents largely listened to classical music. They had four albums I would listen to today:

Simon and Garfunkels greatest hits
Pete Seeger Live at Carnegie Hall
John Denver - think it was Greatest Hits
The Joni Mitchell album where the album cover was her self-portrait with a rose.

Yes, I had a rough childhood.

They will be after signing Pietrangelo. Koivu could win the Conn Smythe. He'd quadruple his regular season scoring prowess in the playoffs.

It seems like the best course of action for the Leafs.. It should be obvious that they need 2 more defensemen. I would love Pietrangelo, but not at $8.5M+.. Leafs can't afford that.

Koivu is the missing link then? Interesting. Can never have enough players over the age of 37.. Spezza, Koivu, Joe Thornton for some reason..

I would imagine no asterisk would be part of the deal.

P.S. As I recall, Asterix was pretty small. Obelix was the big one.

- Atomic Wedgie

That's it! Obelix! I mean Obelisk!. We'll build the world's biggest, with a solid gold plack, proclaiming we won the 2020 Stanley cup. A little photo-shop and voila!
Sure there will be rumors that it didn't happen, but who the hell would believe that when there's a honking big pointy heap of stone, with a shiny thing that looks like it came out of an Egyptian tomb proclaiming otherwise?

Hell, if in 2020 the frickin POTUS can say anything and get believed, why can't everyone jump on the band wagon?

Need to fill out the lineup with cheap "talent".

I don't really care what happens with the fourth line as long as they don't hurt us.

If Dubas signs Pietrangelo and keeps Nylander then he'll need quite a few minimum salary guys.

Yes we all may have a preference. If we can get to the end goal of being able to watch a team that isn't complete and total poop defensively for the first time in a generation... We all win.

New defensemen aren't going to matter until they learn how to play consistent team defense.

I'm afraid weakening the offense to pour money into the defense won't solve the problem at all.

Have to hope a full season with Keefe as the coach will help.. Unless, they turn on him?

You look at Columbus, definitely beast mode top pair. I'm looking at the Dallas and Tampa's of the league.

Tampa always had Hedman. They've had moderate success with plugging in the Girardi's etc., they didn't look fully there until they built 3 dependable pairs... Even with all that offense up front.

Teams are making it deep by not having their eggs in one basket.

And I'm saying this without factoring in the off ice aspect of signing Pietrangelo. I do not think his contract will age well, giving a damn near 30 year old a max term deal is going to have ramifications even without adding his cap hit to a team that already has to many big ticket contracts. It's not going to be a good look when Rielly has to extend either.

- joel878

This.

Taking away millions from your young stars to put it into old stars isn't going to help. I don't think Pietrangelo is the answer.

Defense still wins championships. But then some believe the best defense is a good offense. If you have the puck most of the time then you should control play. You should consistently score goals and draw penalties.

Other people think a hot goalie can carry you to a Cup. But is the hot goaltending a product of a solid team structure? A team who's solid defensively in all 3 zones?

I believe you have to have a system in place and stick to it. Scotty Bowman used the left wing lock for years in Detroit. He used it in Montreal too. But he had the elite players to pull it off. He had the buy in. My question for Leaf fans is this...

Let's say Dubas acquires Pietrangelo and replaces Andersen with a decent goalie. He implements HIS system. How do we know the Leafs elite players like Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Rielly will buy in?

Good teams are able to adapt. We've seen how Tampa has evolved into being a complete team. They can win with skill but can now grind it out. They're not intimidated anymore. They can sustain injuries to key players. Do Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Rielly have it in them to sacrifice offense and win?

Because that's exactly what Yzerman, Fedorov, Shanahan and Lidstrom did in Detroit. It worked.
