Sounds like the SHL will start up tomorrow. Will be interesting to see how Lavoie transitions to the pros.

Good blog Ty.

If you are struggling for idea I know I'd like a lot more info on the draft. Even picks that will not be in Edmonton wheel house.

I just can't get my head around this draft. You say its a forward draft but I have not even heard that much. How good is this draft supposed to be? Top heavy? Deep? Etc...

Using Bob McKenzie's list as a guideline, there are only 6 defensemen who are believed to go in the first round so with the exception of goaltender Askarov, the rest are forwards.

Think deep draft more than top heavy. If you are selecting anywhere in the first round there is a very good chance this season you are selecting a player who is currently on track to be an NHLer in the future. This is why there is also an argument to be made this year for trading down in the first round to secure more picks.

Strong draft that's in the realm of the 2015 draft by many accounts.

It's an apt comparison. Jarvis strikes me as a combination of the defensive awareness of Yamamoto mixed with the goal scoring of DeBrincat.

Thanks for all the input.

I hope they don't trade down. Take the best forward available. Imo preferably a center.

I'm split on trading down.

On one hand, it would be nice to acquire a 2nd and 3rd round pick. Would 14 be enough for 28, 59 and 71?

On the other, with all of the uncertainty in lower leagues it seems like a good time to have fewer prospects of higher caliber.

If Jarvis and maybe Quinn (still not settled on where I have him) are gone, I probably trade down in the range of 20-28 and grab one of Bourque, Reichel, or Mysak. Use the extra pick to get my boy Robins and I think we'd be better off prospect-wise.

The logic was there but the pandemic really makes it look worse. His record so far I'm Edmonton is hardly strong enough to free him of any blame, though.

See location. Set the day he was hired.

Done nothing to move us forward. Another old man in the same position. What old man has succeeded recently? Time to look outside the norm. Hopefully the current old man can reset us back to close to even, but the prior one ruined us for cap, and prospects. This one appears to screw us for picks...

This another 5 years away from being more than a playoff contender to a contender unless something drastic happens quick.

Bobby Marg is retired. So his list is irrelevant to now. His last prospect ranking was in JUNE. 3 months ago, and he even said on his sign off he hadn't been 100% in for the last bit because of covid. He just kind of rode it out.

He also has Askarov at 11, and you have said he shouldn't be a 1st round pick because goalies are voodoo. And has 5 of the top 7 in the 2nd round as defensemen. Jarvis at 17th and says anywhere between top ten to 25 because he is an undersized center and taking that to the next level is questionable for his position.

Bobby mac was a good source when he wanted to be a year + ago. He is now enjoying his first months of retirement and said his mind wasn't completely in it for the last bit.

The absolute last thing we need to draft is an undersized centre. If anything a heavy centre who may wind up being a 3C down the road. Otherwise a position of need sooner than later in a skilled scoring winger like Quinn. Or something with great soon upside like Askarov.

Askarov has 1 year left on his contract in the KHL i believe, Let him work thru that and develop, then bring him over to take over and compete in Bako for 1 year. Let Konovalov show if he can be that guy with Koskinen the last year of that contract. If so we got a big trade piece in either Kono or Askarov. If not, we got the next top G prospect. We have built down the middle so far with all the d prospects and Drai, CMD, and possibly RNH. Final piece to the middle is a top tier G. Then let the wings be found.

I agree with all this; Edmonton is likely as far from outside the box thinking as can get. The closest they got was MacTavish who was hardly that far outside the box, but at least he tried.

Looking back at Holland's moves so far:

Positives: choosing Tippett, Jones contract, Ennis trade, and Lucic for Neal and a (BS) 3rd only by virtue of his contract being buy-out friendly.

Neutrals: signings of Euro FAs, Archibald, and Sheahan's signing (though, his subsequent deployment might drop that to a negative), Green trade, the AA trade (the rationale was at least solid; the result is skewed as a result of COVID). I'd put the Sekera buyout here only because he was intending to use it on Connolly but Florida upped the offer.

Negatives: Smith's signing (the rationale doesn't give the impression of evidence-based decisions), even discussing a new contract with Sheahan, giving Chiasson 2yrs after missing out on Connolly, and resigning Kassian.

TBD: His drafting and changes to the scouting department.

Fear not, Jarvis is a RW. Essentially a better version of Yamamoto.

I can agree with the mixed comparison. The most encouraging thing for me is his skating ability. Yamo and Cat are both elusive skaters, but Jarvis brings the elusive element alongside elite speed.

Stl just told AP to have fun in FA.

If open to a sign and trade:

Nurse, JP, 21 1st, Neal/Russell (cap), plus something

AP ( signed 8.25/6yr) 20 3rd, and maybe some cap.

Close?

Gonna lose him because of their cap situation, why not pull 2 good assets and a maybe in JP for less money, take on Neal or Russell to even the cash and a something else they like in our system instead of lose him for nothing. And its an obvious why from our end. Not sure what cap we could take from them but i am sure we could find a part as strong as Russell or Neal at a slight lesser hit.

we need one that can work with CMD. It appears that isn't an easy position to fill fulltime. Some can fill it from time to time, none permanently. Seems he works best with a heavy body there like Maroon, Drai, or Kassian. Do we need to spend a top pick on a guy like that? Drai is running his thing with skilled guys. Connor appears to need talented guys who can clear things up so he can find a way to just do ridiculous things with them with.

You know who CMD needs on a line? The guy that was traded on Mark Messier's jersey retirement night. The only guy who let us rob the Islanders. The only guy who Ek correctly rumored, and while he was blackfaced on sportsnet trade deadline day coverage. Captain Canada himself.

With the CHL a bit out and the NHL/AHL just as far it makes no sense unless injured or dealing with a family issue/covid concerns. Wonder whats up.
