Because they have quietly been trying to move a good young Dman in Deangelo and having talks with Lundqvist about moving his cap hit. They are in relatively good shape and nobody can figure out what they are targeting with these moves.

We always need something and the local boy thing worked like once for us in free agency.

I doubt he comes here and I'm not sure we have the room for him.

Plus 8M+ for a 31-year old? We did that JT and not sure how great that's going to look in a couple of years.

.......Zdeno Chara wasn't much younger than Pietrangelo is now when he left from Ottawa to Boston. I think it's the greatest free agent signing for any franchise, and it could be for the leafs.

JT has been fantastic.

AP is the real deal and would immediately legitimize this team's d-corps.

8-8.5M? Yes please!

JT was pretty meh last year.

Have there been any quotes as to why we think AP is coming here?

riiight...
They've 'quietly' talked with other teams about Tony D for months. And it's not exactly a secret that Henrik is the #3 goalie on the team with a cap hit of 8.5M. You're clearly talking out of your ass, brother

Hardly, but it is unusual to see the Rangers trying to create cap space when they are not under any real pressure and they are building a really nice team. They are trying to set something up but nobody knows what their target may be.

Just sign Al. We’ll fill in the details later. That makes zero sense.
- Canada Cup

It sounds like a token offer so the Blues can tell their fans "We made an offer. We tried." But they don't really expect to re-sign Pietrangelo.

That is merely stating the obvious that is discussed daily on the Ranger threads. But, I have not seen the Pietrangelo come up in terms of what the Rangers are doing. But, obviously, they are creating the cap space to make a serious play at something.

Eh... he began the year after recovering from an oblique injury and ended up breaking his finger.

Why would you need "quotes" as evidence that AP is "coming here"? We don't know if he's coming here but there are plenty of reasons to believe Toronto would be aggressively pursing Petro if St. Louis has, indeed, pulled back on negotiations.

That is not to say that other teams like the Rags (shhhh!) or Vegas won't also be pursuing his impressive services, but The Dubas surely must be intrigued by the potential signing?

Missed time with a broken hand and played a bunch of games when he came back early from it, where it was still effecting him, and he was still on pace for 30+ goals.

Someone said the other day that Leafs and Vegas are, or could/should be, the front-runners for Pietrangelo. Besides that, it just makes complete sense. He's exactly what the Leafs need.

There is a lot of chatter on Twitter right now suggesting TO is a favourite landing spot for him.

What we need is never really a reason why a player would decide to come here though. Lots of teams need a 1D.

Sounds about right. His hand and that nagging oblique would definitely explain his, relatively speaking, under-whelming numbers.

Snake will hopefully bounce back this season!

I really doubt he just fell off a cliff after the 47 goal 88 point season.

Moving him out of net front on the PP cost him some points and was a mistake imo because he was deadly there.
