From a Sportsnet article today:

“We are not going with a team of all young players,” Dorion assured fans. “We will add key veterans to solidify the progress of our young players.”

Dorion said that general managers are doing a lot of talking before the draft, and admits he is open to swapping some of his picks to move up or acquire a player, but won’t “jump the steps required to make us a better team in the long term.”

Perhaps JB should propose some one-stop shopping for Mr. Dorion.

Jake, Stetcher, Roussel, Baertschi and LE plus the Canucks’ second round pick in 2021 for the 5th overall selection Ottawa holds this year plus Bobby Ryan and [something else].

Ottawa gets five serviceable, veteran players who also help with the ‘Age Gap’ that JB insisted was so important when he first got to Vancouver. With increased minutes, Jake is potentially capable of 25+ goals. Stetcher gives them another RHD, could fit into their top 4, and sets a good example for compete level. Roussel purportedly also ‘drags his team into the fight’ which might be more useful for a younger group like Ottawa. Sven could help with secondary scoring and LE can do his magical ‘little things’ in our nation's capital.

Canucks get a first rounder and a player whose contract is much more buyout friendly than LE's.

If they buy out Ryan, the Canucks net cap space gain from losing Roussel, LE and Sven totals $8.8MM this year plus whatever they would have been paying Virtanen and Stetcher. (Probably a total of about $14MM.)

By taking on Roussel, LE and Baertschi, Ottawa will get $12,366,666 in cap hit compared to Ryan’s $7,250,000, but it will cost them only $5,900,000 in real money. That’s $5.1MM closer to the cap floor for only $400K in real dollars.

Just something to kick around.

No way Ottawa would trade the 5th overall pick for scraps. Maybe that'd work for the NYI pick, but still highly unlikely.

Quinn and Butcher for Ronning, Courtnall, Momesso and Dirk has to be the highest number of players in a Canucks trade.

I was going through possible buyouts and there really is very slim pickings .

Baertschi would cost 800K more than what Canucks would actually owe him. He would also be on the books for two years instead of one .

Loui would get paid 1.5 mil more if he was bought out this year in actual salary and if bought out next year his cap hit would be the same as actual money owed but an additional year of one million would be added to contract.

Ferland is an option if he doesn't go on LTIR. 6 year cap hit.

Beagle is not a good option because of bonus money

Roussel is a better option than Begle but he wont be bought out.

Sutter does not make sense to buy out a serviceable player with one year left.

I would say it is Ferland or no one.

What is the deadline? I think Ferland's decision would be at or near training camp (whenever the next season is.)

Don't know exact dates but it runs about 15 days . I don't know if they will piss around to see if he is okay to play . Last year at two different times he said he was good to go and lasted a week.

I think they will ask him if he is willing to go on permanent LTIR and if he says no they will buy him out and get the 2 mil savings every year.
