Makes a lot of sense to me.

At 8M, it gives the Leafs some flexibility to further adjust and shore up some gaps -- which should make him more secure in his decision to sign with a legit, contending club.

The X factor that a lot of people forget is that winning a Cup with the Leafs would immortalize you forever. Hell, even if you don't win the Cup, being a member of the Leafs alumnus brings you all kinds of perks that you simply don't have with many other clubs.
