Why?
If Petro gets what he cant have with the Blues? and The Blues get some comp for it? - Santo_44
Because it has literally never happened in the NHL?
The odds aren't 0%, but describing something that has never happened as "unrealistic" is fair.

do the leafs want to bother with the LTIR thing again? - senstroll
I think we almost have to if we want to upgrade. Too much money on too few players we need the relief without gouging our offence.
No single team has everything I would want for Marner..and be able to get it... let alone take on his contract.
So it's willy for some D help and LTIR to allow us to upgrade more...

Sign and trades just simply don't happen in the NHL.
I could guess at a few reasons why, but at the end of the day, we are back where we started:
Sign and trades just simply don't happen in the NHL. - Atomic Wedgie
It could happen given the main problem is contract structure.
A sign and trade is a strong option to fix that. |

its 2020.
If the Leafs get Petro it will take creativity.
Bottom line is if the leafs get Petro it will take some work and creative moves. |

ill dig up the article again, but Mirtle did a pretty thorough job of explaining why they dont want to use LTIR anymore..it was a very unique specific circumstance why they did the last few seasons..but its not ideal.
now unless since july something has drastically changed, they probably wont do that |

Leafs don't want to go anywhere near LTIR.
Last year was a specific circumstance where they were already using LTIR (with Horton) so it was mildly beneficial to acquire more LTIR money with Clarkson.
This year - there is no one on LTIR. acquiring LTIR contracts takes away a team's ability to accrue cap space throughout the year and make deals at the deadline.

Agree. I asked the question yesterday on a one for one deal. The comparable was Seth Jones. Who Columbus will not be trading. So we would come up short on any other package for sure. |

PPP had a nice article on Petro.
It would be a but of a gamble but if you are a team that can structure the contract the way he wants and can move some cap out you improve your team by a (frank) load.
a 2nd pairing and a 3rd pairing would help but statistical evidence suggest having a top 10 D in the league makes your D good. Pair him with a 3rd pairing D and you still get a top pairing.
It is a no brainer. Him and Holl would still be a fantastic pairing. He won the cup with Joel Edmondson as his most common partner. |

Crouse and Kuemper should be the targets for the Leafs this off-season.. Give the Coyotes picks and prospects and Johsson |

Crouse is a bargain this season for them but will cost 2.5M the next and a 500k signing bonus.
They could wait on him but if someone offers a nice pick they may do it.
Or maybe Engvall and a late pick for Crouse. |

Have a feeling the trade wars will heat up once the finals are over. Still can't believe we got a first for Kappy. My feet haven't touched the floor yet. Keep 'er goin' Kyle. |

It's the type of player leafs need.
3rd line wingers that can pk, bring some forecheck, isn't afraid to hit and can still contribute offensively. Could play top6 as well if required - might be a good fit on Matthews or Tavares LW.
Crouse, Heinen are guys that would help Leafs very much.

I agree, but just because Rutherford paid a 1st rd pick for a 3rd line winger, doesn't mean Dubas should |

The 94 SCF between the Rangers and Canucks is the best SCF I've ever seen. I never saw any before 1982. Pavel Bure was unreal in those playoffs. So was Brian Leetch. |
