Of course Pettersson is likely going instead of JJ. JJ isn't going anywhere. I've said this before, but everyone needs to give up on this dream at least for the coming season.

Jesse Marshall threw up some fancy stats. Essentially Matheson is comparable to Gudbranson but provided more offense on a worse team.

Totally ok with this deal if JJ is off the Penguins roster one way or another.

the fact that this could signal the end of JJ would make it a home run. we dont have any idea if Pettersson gets traded because of this... but as it stands right now with Schultz out and Matheson in... there's improvement (albeit marginal)

the biggest downside to me, is potentially blocking POJ. even if JJ is moved...POJ is 5th on the LHD depth chart

How much better is Matheson really over how Riikola has looked in limited minutes?

Are you going to play him on his off side as an RHD over either of Letang or Marino?

I will take Matheson in Johnson’s spot any day. Like I said, if Johnson is somehow and someway off the Pens roster, I’m fine with this deal. It also gives a little bit of cap relief and opens a spot on the 3rd line for a “younger faster” player that apparently JR wants.

I’m being a bit optimistic lol. But I just can’t see how JR could add another massive contract on defense without knowing he is dumping one. The only other large contact on defense is Johnson’s. Unless he’s completely lost his mind and is moving dumo

Its not making much sense to any of us who do watch every, or almost every Pens game. There's definitely more moves coming whcih is even more scary because it probably means that Pettersson is gone.

I've been following Matheson since he was 18, before the NHL. I have felt strongly about him throughout, so perhaps I'm biased. But if used right, he can be a star. Disagree on decision making.
Not many players get my love like this. He's been one. Frustrating to see his usage
